Set Pieces

So did anyone else see the fan who touched the ball right before the corner we scored on? Someone need to get on the interweb and find that guy ASAP, clearly he’s what we’ve been missing all along. we should clone him and place him as ball boy in each corner at WHL.

We looked threatning against Chelski and even better yesterday I am glad to read that after Stoke we worked on set pieces but why the hell weren't we doing that before? Seems shocking at this level really?

The ginger was nothing special - Gomes would have saved all those. They were all weak/poorly placed shots straight at him. The ones which Bale/Walker nearly missed - the didn't even move. Same for Saha's strike = clueless

Thank you. He didn't make one world class save last night. If we had better finishers at our club, we would have have scored at least 6.

I just wish that whoever was taking them actually thought as they put the ball down " get it over the first man and then see what happens".

Im sure that if they did that as opposed to taking the set piece on autopilot then the amount of balls that would reach the centre of the 6 yard would increase dramatically.

I think thats a little unfair. Most of his saves were instinct saves, especially the Parker one but two saves that definitely were excellent was the Modric one early on after I think Bale had his initial shot parried and Bogdan tipped the follow up over the bar. The save one on one from Van der Vaart was also a very good save considering the way he spread himself and the amount of time Rafa had to pick his spot.

Looks like VdV has been practising his corners as there's been a marked improvement in the past couple of games which has paid off with our first successful corner in the league since Bale against Bolton at the start of December afaik.

A shame that it took almost 4 months of firing blanks to shame the players / coaches into action but hopefully it'll be enough to help us get those key goals to secure 3rd place.

Seriously, it has pretty much been Modric short or VDV straight into the first man for months and months. I couldn't remember what a proper Spurs corner looked like. I was vaguely aware of that lucky streak of two corners in 3 months where Bale got on the end at the near post but apart from that it has been a wasteland of mispent opportunity.

It was almost like Rafa thought he was on the end of his old Sega Megadrive playing Speedball 2 and was trying to take out the first man, maybe he heard a vendor in the distance screaming "Icecream" and it brought it all flooding back... I don't know.

But enough of that, we've gone and ruddy done it, first Nelson and now Ade, and Rafa put in a couple of other not unuseful balls besides... Bale too if memory serves? Corners shouldn't be a tacticle minefield... Keep it away from the keeper, loft it low, use some pace, repeat ad infinitum. With a couple of units like Ade and Kaboul in the box, this will score more goals than all the Scholes'esque trickery you care to mention.

So thought we were brick, but heard on one of the games, believe it was Villa (might be wrong) that has had 170 corners for the season, with no goals scored.

I'm still enjoying this lovely dream I had the other night, where Adebayor scored two headers in a game, and one of them was even direct from a corner. Of course, I know that would never happen...

According to Norwegian commentators during the Chelsea game Harry had said that the team had been working on set pieces after the Stoke game.

2nd game after that and we score from a corner. And we looked threatening many times during the Bolton game, and we looked a lot better at set plays against Chelsea than we had in a long time.

Strange that...

Hold on a min, are you saying Harry worked on something during training ?

We didn't score for 132 consecutive corners according to the commentators against Swansea. They were always outswinging and feeble, especially when they came from Modric. Recently VDV has been taking them from the right instead of Modric and has actually been delivering good balls and its no surprise we have come close to scoring lots of times from them over the past few games. I don't think the issue is how our players attack the ball, it is simply that the delivery has been consistently woeful for years.

If we keep this standard of corner up I can see us scoring a few more by the end of the season.

Also, Adebayor hadn't scored a header for us before that game! He missed plenty of sitters as well...

Definitely been improving them over the past few weeks, Bale hitting the bar against Chelsea, Nelsen scoring against Bolton, Adebayor at the weekend. You can expect to see Kaboul getting a goal before the end of the season if we keep it up. Nice to see really!

Does anyone remember when we scored from 3 corners against Chelsea in that 4-4 draw!?

Crosses and corners.

How can it be that Premier League players fail to deliver on the most basic of skills? I was always taught that the best crosses and corners were delivered with a flat tragectory and with momentum. So what were Modric's power puff corners and Ekottos up and under crosses about. This explains why we rarely score with headers. If there is no power from the cross/ corner you cannot get powder and direction from the header. Where is the coaching then?

Benny should be our set piece specialist, especially corners...no more from Modric please

Direct free kicks

When did we last score direct from a free
Kick and why are we so useless at them? Me and my mate tying think now genuinely can't think when we last scored one but probably just being thick?
