Repetitive bickering and point scoring about money and our transfer policy

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

Is it JUST 20m though? It isnt. Being in the CL on a continuous basis means the opportunities for bringing in extra revenue through sponsorship, for the kits and stadium, increases. So its not JUST 20m but actually a brickload more.

I agree though I wouldnt want us to bet our future, although isnt that hedged by the fact we have a 40-60m asset in Bale? So worst case scenario we sell him, which would happen if we arent showin ambition anyways.

Its was 14m extra last time we were in when we took our expenses away from our revenue.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

How do you propose we get ourselves in that position without signing quality players?

The only way we're gonna qualify regularly for the Champion's League increasing our revenue with a new stadium.
There's no way we can do the underdog thing season after season.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

Or if Uncle Joe put some money into the club rather than his fleet of yachts.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

Your post/s clearly insinuate it. You say we should not "gamble" to get in the top 4, we shouldn't "take risks". So how do you propose we make sure we grab the opportunity of overtaking one of the established sides? what is your proposal on how we do that because what you're currently doing right now is proposing the obvious but not giving examples on how we do that.

id suggest that is how you took it rather than what i implied ;)

we can buy quality, we done so the summer just gone and for the most part every summer previously going back a fair amount of time - what's to think we'll suddenly stop buying quality or players with potential quality?

buying quality players at a good price that fit in with our young/potential mantra isn't a risk - buying Loic Remy (i think it was you who mentioned him) in January for 16mil or whatever the quoted price at the time was when we already have a side capable of finishing 3rd, with the current managers long term future in doubt is a risk.

So how do you propose we make sure we grab the opportunity of overtaking one of the established sides?
we just have to carry on with what we have been doing over the years, buying smartly in the transfer market, look for good deals, buy young players with potential - maximize our potential as a club/team (in short)

5th 5th 4th 5th 4th are 5 of our last 6 league finishes (iirc) and i believe we are on course to add at least another 5th to that list - so yeah, just carry on with what we have been doing really

i like this approach, however every summer we have to face the battle of holding on to our better players who cannot wait to hang around for the club to eventually be a top 4 side, so in reality we are running around in circles and not actually getting anywhere

how many more seasons does Bale want to stay without CL football and the chance winning big medals? who next will run out of patience...Vertonghen? Lloris? every summer we will be picked off and we will be back to square one

i just hope the new stadium will change things and by the time its built we still have enough decent players to fill it and realistically compete for a top 4 place every season

i guess the hope is that you eventually hit a 'purple patch' of players hitting their potential at the same time (supplemented with a few more ready made quality players across the squad) - we can't buy players of Bale or Modric (of his last two seasons form) level of quality - we have to get them before they hit that level. i think under Redknapp we stalled somewhat on that side of our approach, although it was probably more down to the dissolving of the DoF set up than it being purely down to Redknapp. we seem to be heading back to what we had before (AVB = Head Coach for example) so id expect to see us put more effort in to finding the players of tomorrow.

our youth set up seems to be churning out a higher caliber of player as well which hopefully at the very least will mean a bit more money for the transfer kitty as we supply the lower prem teams with players or on a more positive angle we could unearth a couple of Ledley King level players across the team.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

- Who was disputing otherwise?

- What relevance does that have on our 'buying' ability?

Plenty of people were arguing that Levy was withholding money that could otherwise have been spent on incoming players.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

No actually that's not the case at all. That might be your primary point or the point of the various other posters but this whole debate started when it was declared that we had no money (or little money) last summer and that the financial report shows that. You have to understand that there are various conversations going on at one time so your primary point might not be the same for others.

It wasn't my point at all. But it's perfectly apparent, despite the fact that it might not originally have been expressed exactly as it should have been, that the nub of Spursalot's and / or braineclipse's argument was based on published accounts and was specifically mentioned to counter the claims or implications, by others, that Levy was somehow sitting on some mythical pile of cash.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

cheers for that. interesting plan from Arse then. Spend less in transfer fees but pay higher wages. It worked for them

Some further figures here: Graphic: Premier League transfer and wage spending from the 2000/01 season to 2011/12 - Telegraph

Just goes to emphasise the correlation between a club' wage bill and their league position, as whilst ManU might have been surpassed in transfer spending by Chavski and Emirates Marketing Project in recent years they still can match them when it comes to player' salaries. ManU' latest financial figures show that their wage bill has surged to almost £200m, largely thanks to the mega-bucks they offered RvP which ultimately won them the Premier League.

We have consistently finished higher in the league than our relative wage bill in recent years: http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/latest-news/wage-and-the-premier-league-scaled-table

So hopefully when we move into the new stadium and can match the Scum' wages we will surge past them in the league.

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

Once again, I'm delighted that you aren't in charge of player recruitment at Spurs.

Well, seems like top managers didnt want to get anywhere near these players either so its not only me. They seem to prefer players who can control and pass a football and play 90 minutes at high tempo.

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

People need to stop believing the ITK hype that is trumped out ever transfer window by attention seeking idiots.
We cant afford the wages of these players. Levy isnt going to to a Ridsdale and bet the future of the club on a Champion's League Dream. We get an extra 20m from the champion's league , he's not gonna overspend in an attempt to get 20m!

Another factor which never gets considered, is that when you qualify for the CL in 4th spot, you qualify for a play-off! It's not a guarantee! It's an invitation for a play-off to get in...

In itself, this means that Levy cannot move quickly and offer the massive wages CL calibre players require, let alone the security we'll be in it!!! With 36,000 seats we simply do not have the numbers to gamble on such things without seriously compromising the fine structure we have in place. It is why not getting 3rd last season was such a massive, massive blow considering the position we were in during Feb.

Let's face it, the work which has gone on this season looks set to convince Bale his immediate future lies with us (for at least one more season) and given that this will take an increase in wages which will equal Demba Ba's transfer fee (loose calculation I'll admit!) I'd say it could be the best bit of transfer work anyone does in the window anywhere if he's modeling the new kit in August...

We have had a limited budget for some time. There were several budgets in place as the season entered January 2012. One for missing out on top 4/CL, one for getting the 4th place playoff and one for finishing 3rd. It is my firm belief that had we finished 3rd, we'd have seen two world class incomings in the summer.

The most interesting bit of tittle-tattle I picked up at the end of THIS January's window revolved around Demba Ba. Now, I thought we wouldn't buy anyone in Jan, and I was informed that we had very little money to spend until this coming summer. But (and take this with a pinch of salt) I heard that AVB was told he could have Ba if he wanted, that we would meet the price/wages (again this goes counter to the insurance thing I'd heard). The whisper goes that AVB said he'd rather keep the potential 10-12 mill outlay (incl wages) and put it towards summer strengthening as he didn't feel Ba would be the right long-term signing. Who knows...

id guess that Levy offered Remy to AVB in the same way and AVB gave exactly the same response

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

How much money has he put into the club?

probably fcuk all compared to what he will receive when he decides to sell

fair play to the Mansours and the russian bloke at chelbrick from this point of view. They have pumped their billions into their clubs. Our billionaire is a tight fisted twunt with short arms and long pockets

Tight fisted twunt?

Our billionaire wants to increase the value of our club so that he can sell it in the future and profit from it. The only ways to do that is to make us a more attractive commodity through success. That is his aim.

If you want to support a cash rich oil funded club you know where you can find them.

A Club with thousands of fans should be able to pay for itself and not be the trophy/play thing of some slimy fudger and his ill gotten gains.

I think that you misunderstand his motives for buying us. We were bought as a investment not a plaything. Anyone who expects ENIC to put money into the club is living in cloud cuckoo land.

That's how business works. Success isn't just measured using trophies.
