Putin & Russia

Chinese leadership now apparently voicing some kind of concern for the situation in Ukraine. That's positive, although I doubt China will put too much pressure on Putin either. But if China wants an end to the war, they have more power to make it happen than any other non Russian country, IMO.

Russia is a dismal land just festering whilst waiting for a new ice age to scrape off 14000 years of accumulated droppings.

Personally I do not feel sorry for the average Josef as it is his own sterile hostile society. Their lunatic leaders invariably come from poor backgrounds and follow well trodden paths of subjugation and brutality to get to the top.

Putin is the best representation of that nation. The mode and the median and certainly the meanest. He is only mortal but a million like him wait in the shadows.

They really could do with an injection of fresh dna and ideas.

Met a lot of lovely Russians. Feel for them at this time, even those that I've disagreed with on some important issues.

Traumatised people and society imo.

Game of Thrones new series?

They notice instantly, and think...maybe Putin is right, the West are against us.

Surely it’s a “are we the bad guys moment”, it’s that or “yes Vlad is right, all of these liberal corporations are backing Nazi’s in Ukraine that definitely exist”.

in groups and out groups are base, powerful human drivers. Whether irrational football fans, us vs the tribe over the mountain who steal our fruit...or the west taking away Big Macs... Taking away from people who don't have much plays into Putin's narrative. Aided and abetted by a state-controlled media.

In the cities the people are not like that though, Moscow is a wealthy and vibrant metropolis, like any other in Europe.

Age and whether you use international social media is probably the greatest determinate of how informed you are. But people who were quite against Putins actions, are starting to feel some sympathy and kinship. Because their simple lives are also being attacked. You would probably feel the same if there were mass job losses, and things you'd taken for granted were taken away from you through no actions you had taken.

Yeah, I like to think I’d see through the government flimflam when it was that obvious though.

I don't know. I find the most informed people tend to read books and the most ill-informed tend to read social media.

The world has gone very topsy-turvy when I am on the same side as these people. I watched the news and except for the nuclear weapon bit I don't see how this is any different from any other conflict.

I have been in the pub saying the same thing. Yet people accuse me of being deliberately counter argument. I really don't think that is what I am doing. Always explain why I think the way I do and put my point across calmly.

I do think there's something to it. The big piece of counter evidence though is that NATO in recent times intervened for the Muslims (Bosnians and Kosovans) against the Christians (Serbs) in Yugoslavia

People are taking sides now like its a football game. Many fail to think about the repurcussions after the war is over. 5, 10, 30 years later, the sanctions and military aid won't be forgotten by Russia and her allies. Most politicians only care about their next election and social media is making everyone more impatient for action and short term solutions. Oh well, global warming will get us all anyway so maybe it doesn't matter.

Surely the most likely scenario is that Putin gets overthrown and Russia have a proper democracy, that is welcomed into the international community with open arms.

People are taking sides like it's a football game, but the game is a John Terry, Sol Campbell, Luis Suarez XI vs a Gary Mabbutt XI.

It's really easy to pick the right side here.

I dont think there is a day that goes by when there is not a conflict in Africa. This seems to be the first media led war where people videoing themselves under a staircase working with an Uzi behind them kind of makes the war seem more real and pulls along more empathy than say those that suffer in Yemen or Africa from the same kind of conflicts.

If you’re young and on western social media you would, as pro Ukrainian sentiment is high. But imagine you’d planned to get a bed from IKEA this weekend for your kid but now couldn’t, you not on international social media seeing bombed residential buildings, and your wife had just been laid off by the international company she worked for. Would you still side with the west?
