Pre Season 2016

This must be the the least active pre-season I have known us have.

In the past we used a good 4 or 5 matches before the first league match (not that it ever did us much good), who can ever forget Bents 17 goals in 9 matches.
Just hope we are mentally and physically prepared for Everton in just over 2 weeks, we need to hit the ground running. Finishing last season DDLL was bad enough, we could really do with a win early doors to build some momentum

This is just like last season. We play several games, just not in front of an audience.

Similar complaints were heard last summer iirc - didn't work out too bad in the end

in the end maybe - but we had a slow start and a poor finish. We can't afford the same this season. The Juve game was a disappointment as we didn't have hardly any first teamers on show and the rest lacked any sort of shape - it was not dissimilar to watching England toil against Iceland.

I saw a promising group of youth players buying into the high press that Poch has introduced to the club. On the contrary it was good to see that this philosophy transcends through the whole setup at Spurs. Unsurprisingly these players are not up to prem standards, I'm sure Poch and his management team will use what they saw today and what they see in training to decide what is best for these players.

Turgid first half, good second half. Got to see a few players I hadn't seen before and the kids gained a bit of experience.

Wanyama and Lamela the pick of our lot.
Did you just make the first 'tugid' remark of this (pre) season! Well played that man!

This was my concern really. We were always playing catch-up after the stuttering start. As I said, would be great to start with a win. That 4-0 win at Stoke seems a lifetime away already

watched the highlights. CCV is not ready and neither is whoever played next to him.

Correct. I've said this for sometime, he's got potential but is a long way off being a premier league centreback. Too many people read he's done well at a low level and think the step up is easy, it's not, it didn't help playing with an other centreback playing his first game, a makeshift fullback and little protecting from the midfield.

You've said it yourself there, he wasn't exactly dropped into a functioning side with experienced players around him. Fans were questioning Wimmer after a sketchy debut against Arsenal where he had Fazio and other bit-part players for company, neither instances were fair conditions to judge the player on and let's not forget that CCV's opponent today was Paulo Dybala, he won't be facing that quality every week. Even with that said I thought he grew into the game, I think he should at least be given a chance alongside Toby/Jan, Walker, Rose, Dier, Dembele et al before making a definitive judgment.

Blasphemy mate, do you not know he is " one of our own" ;)

Pre-season is solely about fitness. That's it.

In past seasons the quality of our performances have actually been inversely proportional to our performances once the season starts.

just watched and here's my observations:

Dominic Ball: awful. more back passes than Scotty Parker. Not confident enough on the ball and made CCV (a good prospect) look off the pace.
Lamela: growing in confidence and it shows
Tommy Carroll: didn't have an impact on the game (something that could be said far too often about him)
Starting LB: not creative enough and looked back to pass every single time. Makes you appreciate Rose and Walker's ability quite a bit watching that performance. Heard something about him being played out of position so hopefully that's the case for him.
Mason: didn't make an impact at all in midfield, perhaps a bit out of position and is more suited to the eriksen or alli role
Winks: looked a better fit in the role alongside Wanyama but still shaky at times and gave away possession in a few dangerous areas.
Wanyama: a physical specimen, you could see his confidence on the ball grew when we brought on some of our more technical (and just so happens) younger players on towards the end. Him alongside Dier and Alli in central midfield will be tough for any midfield opposition to break through.
Janssen: looked slow, held up play a few times but didn't add much and we didn't create many chances for him at all.
Harrison and Edwards: both ones for the future in my eyes, think they'll turn into two really good players. hoping we can keep hold of them both and continue to help them develop.

I'm not making a definitive judgement, I'm simply saying he's not ready YET, he still makes mistakes at U21 level an until he irons them out of his game he will be a liability in the first team, I'm sure in a more experienced team he will cope better. Surely the aims is for the club to go forward rather than pick players because they get good reviews. His time will come when the manager thinks it's right. I admit I maybe a little critical but his position is so important, for many years I criticised Mr Campbell as his positional play was poor and he over relied on his pace and strength to get him out of trouble.

Ball and CCV will learn significantly from that match and the mistakes they made. Even by the 2nd half I thought they had adjusted their play somewhat.

Nerves were a part of it too I'm sure.
