Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

By not raising the tax thresholds for years has effectively mean't thousands have ended up paying more tax and thus a reduction in income

Anything from our fabulous new Govt about when those might be looked at ??
Tories were going to freeze them until 2028 I think

@scaramanga is beside himself that we are 'tinkling' his money away on giving pay rises to people that care for other people.

Understandable as completely jars against his own ideologies.

Exactly. @scaramanga has been nothing if not consistent in his repeated disregard for the working class. Presenting to him the logic, let alone moral requirement, to pay these people properly whether driven by an inflation economy or not, is a waste of time.

You really do seem to have a chip on your shoulder about the result of the election.

Ordinary practice is for that kind of policy to built into the budget. So look out for it then. I would expect something along those lines (IE something to ease the middle class tax burden), combined with tax raising measures aimed at high earners, big business and tax avoiders.

I’m very happy to pay more tax if public services actually work.
This is really interesting.
So for my time in the civil service it's been under the Tories. And the spending ethos has always been shortsighted and lowest cost, lowest value product.
Public services do work - within the restrictions set on them by spending levels; it'll be interesting to see if Labour can find a politically justifiable way of allowing investment spending rather than just plugging a hole spending.
I'm not expecting Keynesian - the country is too far down the Tory rabbit hole to cope with that anytime soon. But some expansive thinking would be good

It’s the old problem: many Britons want Scandinavian style public services while paying US style tax.

Absolutely...which of course would require less terrible sub-contracting to brick companies who charge too much and skimp on actually doing what they're contracted to do properly. I suspect a not-too-deep dig into some of the contracts given by the previous government would reveal some (not so) startling self-interest equations.

I would suggest looking at where and what former members of the government are doing now. George Osborne had how many directors jobs?

Im liking the start Starmer has made with the railways. Want to see the same with the water companies.

Heard dont know if it true but they have got rid of the tax relief on Research and Development for companies. Think that would be a mistake, if true.
