Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Rashford always plays well against us. So I don't like him. But he could score against Boris.

While families are losing jobs, we have a government who said they would level up, but we can't give poor kids temporary free meals until Easter if they need it? Outrageous. An inexpensive temp intervention to ensure hungry kids are looked after.

The Queen recognised Rashford's point, and logic and gave him an MBE. Steve Baker MP on the hand who criticised Rashfood is a grade A clam.

Surely an avoidable own-goal from our government? Can't have cost more than tens of millions.

the rule that says you need EU permission first

the one preventing the receipient gaining advantage on a selective basis

the one that doesn't allow for competition being distorted which are closely linked.

Literallllllllly no idea. Did you make these up!? :)

Ultimaley I believe if a government wants to provide industries or companies with specific support to bolster them, protect UK jobs, invest in an industry of future importance to gain a headstart then they should be able too.

We agree! Governments should be able to do this. The UK has maybe been too laissez-faire on this score, as outlined in previous posts. Other nations in the EU have done far more to protect national industries. There was a suggestion this would change under May, but we just let Cobham the arms company be sold to foreign owners, so the trend continues.

Free School Meals/Rashford etc. Aside from political affiliations or what you think of feeding children etc, how do the government possibly think they can sustain this view again? Rashford is still using his profile and platform on the matter and every day it just makes the government look worse and worse, another U-Turn incoming?

And some people still think that Dominic Cummings is a master-manipulator of the media.

Wow. Just been scrolling through the tweets on his timeline. It's amazing to see all these businesses, many of whom will be struggling themselves, stepping up to provide free meals to those children who need them (and many local councils as well). Puts the government and all MPs who voted against this the other night to shame. Well, it might if they had any awareness of such a concept as shame.

The irony is, the government probably found billions to help out to eat out. A few 10s of millions to ensure the poorest kids in society don't go hungry over winter as a temporary measure, they can't afford?

Steve Baker is such a knob: “extending freebies are a sticking plaster not a solution”. Food to get by is not a freebie, but an essential. Yes a sticking plaster is exactly what this is while many in society have no money. All of the Covid interventions by government are a sticking plaster. Shameful.

it’s not even “over winter”. It’s during school holidays, for children who are already getting free school meals during term time anyway. You’d think it was advocating giving free food to all kids everywhere.

Don't think it's "quoting Twitter" per se. It's Rashford pointing out tonnes of local cafes and restaurants offering to feed local hungry children in support of his campaign, and this in turn is making a bit of a mockery of Govt.

That's fair enough and good on rashford and the local cafes and your right about the government.

I just hate twitter.

On the free school meals subject

My little girl started school and gets free school meals for the first 3 years of primary school

We’re financially in a position to not need this but there is no way to say you don’t need it and let another kid get our meals say during holidays etc
