Paulinho

Re: Official - Paulinho

Walker was turd water for around 6 or 7 months of last season but our back up option hasn't proven he can play week in week out in this league consistently so he stuck with him (wrong decision imo as Naughton should have been given a chance). I'm not willing to accept the same situation with Paulinho because:

A) centre midfield is a far more important position than FB imo.

B) Our supposed 'back up' option is a better player.

Who has AVB shown he's ruthless with btw?

I didn't say it was the same situation with Walker, did I? I think it's comparable and worth noting that some players recover their form through continuously getting time on the pitch. If AVB rates Paulinho highly and thinks he'll be able to do that then it could make a lot of rational sense to keep playing him whereas you seem to claim that the only possible reason to keep playing his is either a contract issue or some irrational reason.

AVB showed clearly that he can be ruthless at Chelsea with Alex and Anelka. For us he's shown it with for example Dawson who he made captain and then tried to sell, Ekotto (imo) and arguably a few more like Dempsey, Defoe, Sig along the way.

Re: Official - Paulinho

Rational sense to play a player that is off form and has been for a while, in the hope that he might suddenly pick up form. I don't agree.

Not quite the wording I used. I was pointing towards some plausible reasons to think that him regaining form might be more likely than just a hope that it suddenly happens.

How long is "a while" in this instance in your opinion?

Re: Official - Paulinho

problem we have, its not just Paulinho that is off form. All of our players are currently off form which is not a good thing. If one player is off form then the team can carry that player. 11 players that arent playing well just isnt good. Whether that is the dressing room spirit, or something else who knows. But it is very rare that a team of good players plays so badly due to form, all at the same time.

Re: Official - Paulinho

i still think he is the only purchase that does what it says on the tin

BUT...i do conceed that his form and confidence may be in he toilet and in this stretch of form he is exactly as Kingdawson has described.

he cant seem to pass well and quickly
his shooting is off and wack
he tends to dwell a tad bit too much for my liking

i may be wrong about him but first impressions last...i'll wait till form in the whole team picks up and then re think my position on him

So far he has done everything 90% well but seems to struggle with the last bits (which are the most important). The miss against Fulham after dummying two players out of the way epitomises that for me but its his first season in a new country etc... and i haven't ben disappointed with him as he clearly puts the effort in.

He does however look knackered at times and that needs to be sensibly managed by AVB which i does appear hasn't happened.

He had a good game vs United which came off the back of no game mid week. Thats no coincidence IMO and he will not look great on Saturday if starting again IMO unless he gets some bloody rest which is the idea of the squad. I did read a stat that we have rotated less than any team in the top 8 or 10 which is crazy when you look at the squad set up and the number of games we have played.

agreed. There is a misconception that AVB rotates more than Redknapp. I'm more used to AVB flogging a dead horse...which is insane seeing as how big the squad we have is.

i still like paulinho but as you say he seems to be playing a bit jaded

According to http://talksport.com/football/shoot...-premier-league-rotation-analysed-13120470339 we have used 24 players in the league so far this season which is the same as ARSEnal and ManU.

Looking at the time played we have 3 outfield players who've been there for all 1260 minutes of the league campaign this season in Vertonghen, Walker and Dawson with Paulinho just behind on 1230.

Terry, Ivanovic and Remieres have played every minute for Chelsea as have Jagielka, Distin and Coleman for Everton.

No outfield player has been ever present for ARSEnal, Emirates Marketing Project, Liverpool or ManU... :-k

Maybe it was the frequency that they have been used that the article was referring too.

E.g. Lloris, Walker, Paulinho, Verts, Soldado, etc.. all being pretty much ever present but i may be wrong.

There's a million ways of working out that stat though.

I had a look there and our 11 players with most premier league minutes this season had a total of 10495 minutes (954 minutes per player)
Whereas Arsenal's had 11025 minutes (1002 minutes per player)

i'll add on to the list

late in being the late runner in attack
loses possession too frequently in the centre of the pitch
doesn't look up enough to spring a quick attack
takes his time taking the ball off dawson and taking 10 touches advancing 10 feet before passing sideways

the biggest problem I have with him is for a key central box to box player, the play seems to just conveniently pass him as he goes about on his one-speed - i.e. NOT influential enough. stats wise, the lack of assists and goals just say that he isn't doing a good enough job as our number 10, so we might as well throw lamela there with sandro, dembele or capoue - who really know how to defend - in support.

i would like to see him up his influence on the game, but I am skeptical because I think that he is just physically not cut out for the EPL. Modric was really good in this role keeping possession and having an eye for a forward pass. Jenas and Paulinho - I don't see much difference.

Re: Official - Paulinho

^ i think he looked good against United where he seemed to have been given a different role - less defensive responsibility and to play close to Soldado. Maybe he is more suited to this type of game than the box2box role we have seen him in so far. If we play Dembele/Sandro behind there really is no need for the more advanced central player to have defensive responsibility anyway.

They've all been given breaks in the cups. If it's league only we probably have a few ever presents.

Re: Official - Paulinho

In the latest edition of Norwegian football magazine Josimar, Paulinho is ranked as the 21st best player in the world. Above the likes of Xavi, Marco Reus, Yaya Toure, Thomas Muller, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney.

The jury menbers were Guillem Balague, James Horncastle, Iain Macintosh and Tor-Kristian Karlsen - who obviously see something special in him.

true that he looked better in a free more advanced position - but don't you think someone like eriksen or lamela could do that job better? paulinho doesn't have good shot on him, he seems trigger happy to blast at everything when given the opportunity, when sometimes a bit a finesse would be more useful.

will be glad to swop Paulinho for any of those listed up there.

Re: Official - Paulinho

He does seem to get in good positions in the box, seen him have a few headers and follow ups etc.

i think he just needs time to settle and realise he cant be so slow in the build up. I remember Ramires (albeit a different player) looking similarly way off the pace too and now hes their main cog.

Possibly, i was going to mention Eriksen but id like to see him deeper where he could pull the strings, would offer an alternative to Dembele in the central pairing in games where defensive responsibilities coild be handled by Sandro (or Capoue) I want Lamela on the right as an inside forward atm - we're pretty well stacked, at least in terms of numbers, centrally and would prefer to find a solution with the players we have there.
