First of all we lost coeff points losing here. 2nd people already took for granted the portuguese team once and they beat us, they might surprise us again. 3rd he only had to take another 3-4 players for us to have a decent first 11 and he didn't and lost. 4th, they could have beaten us even harder with some luck, interesting what you and others would have said then. Looks like the LUCKY win with an unprepared City got people thinking we are some sort of high quality team... Remember that Zagreb gave this "quality" team 3-0, and Zagreb were beaten 3-0 by a Moldavian team yesterday. We are not a lot better than Pacos, and even with our current first 11 we would have a tough time going through.

We could have taken 3-4 first XI players and maybe be marginally better off - which on yhe flip side wouldmake us marginally worse off for the league game on Sunday where 2/3 league points could be dropped - is that worth more than two coefficients?

Not when all we need to do is scrape through

Increasing our chances

You'll have to explain to me what a world without deserving to feel arrogant feels like.

Haha please enlighten us as to your reasoning for deserving to feel arrogant.

I’m certain it’ll be more interesting than reading about this game.

It's the beggining of the season, what are 3-4 players too tired to play now and Sunday? They literally just playef 1 official game and we are nursing them already, again just 3 players not the whole first 11 and not even the whole 90 minutes. We have plenty of time to nurse them in the group stage, when a defeat isn't that important. We had bad luck drawing a portuguese team and should've adjusted a bit.

Can't believe Nuno disregarded this. Especially when he knows teams in Portugal play good football. We were unlucky at the draw and should have taken this match seriously, hope he does the home match. We have the chance to chill more in the group stage, but failing to get there would make us a laughing stalk for our rivals. Not to mention the coeff points we would lose, some prize+ticket money lost, good match time for our subs

I think -quite rightly- he has decided to prioritize the Wolves match and trust that we can turn this around at home. Fitness is key. Keeping the first team healthy in these early season days is massive.

To address a general point in this thread, if exiting now ensured we got a top 4 spot I'd bite your hand off...

p.s. expect to see Kane play in the return home game next week...

It would be nice to win 2:0 next week but I will not lose any sleep if we get knocked out. I want the boys to focus on finishing as high as they can in the league. If it means Son and Co have to worry about playing just one match a week most weeks, well I can live with that. I am glad none of our starting 11 from Sunday played yesterday, it means Nuno has his priorities in the right order.

As for players like Winks, well his lousy performance will be rewarded with less opportunities to place first team football this season. He has proved he is not good enough for us and he has not helped his chances for a move. If we get knocked out next week he probably will not get any more game time with us until the League Cup.

brick result but quite frankly i dont care about this competition at all.

What i will say, is it just shows the rebuild has a long way to go as the squad depth is clearly not good enough. So much dead wood still needs rid.

I don’t think he did.

the senior players that him down, but that’s not a shock is it.

Spot on.

Not just keeping them healthy, but allowing them to train undisturbed by the game and travelling that comes with it. Could have real benefits later on. It's a gamble worth taking at this stage imo.

Not too worried about the performance. Was a team with just a couple of players that are in contention for PL starts at this point. Thrown together team of new signings, youth players and second/third choice first team options.

Thought Scarlet looked good. Got no service, but showed a good physical level, some nice touches and a lot of effort in a frustrating game.

Minutes for Romero who was up and down, but showed some of the reasons why we signed him.

Positive involvements for Gil, Lo Celso and Sessegnon though ultimately not enough on the night, but minutes in legs and signs of what may be to come at a later stage.

But 4tht place in England go directly into the CL groups now.
The thing coefficient points was good for was getting a handy draw in the play off round.

Since they brought they changed the seeding for the groups in 2015 coefficient has become way less important.

Pot 1 now contains the title holders and the champions of the top seven associations.
So this year Villareal, Lille, Sporting and Inter are in the Pot1. You would be happy to get any of them.

Before you were in trouble if you ended up in pot 3, now you can still get a nice draw.

Last year, a 4th seed and three 3rd seeds got through the groups.

Regardless even if we missed on europe for a year we will still have enough coefficient points in the bank to be second seeds as usual.
I think it is CL winners, Europa winners and the champions of 6 countries who make up pot 1 (they only go to champions of 7th ranked league if either European competition winner also happens to win their league).

Last year was something of an anomaly really though wasn’t it?…. The previous year (and virtually every year) Juventus and PSG take the Italy and France champions spots. If you look at the last decade Villarreal are also something of an anomaly in the Europa with the other 9 winners being: Seville (x4), Chelsea (x2), Atletico Madrid (x2), Man Utd and Porto.

In most years being in pot 2 is likely to lead to an easier group than pot 3.
