But 4th place in England go directly into the CL groups now.
The thing coefficient points was good for was getting a handy draw in the play off round.

Since they brought they changed the seeding for the groups in 2015 coefficient has become way less important.

Pot 1 now contains the title holders and the champions of the top seven associations.
So this year Villareal, Lille, Sporting and Inter are in the Pot1. You would be happy to get any of them.

Before you were in trouble if you ended up in pot 3, now you can still get a nice draw.

Last year, a 4th seed and three 3rd seeds got through the groups.

Regardless even if we missed on europe for a year we will still have enough coefficient points in the bank to be second seeds as usual.

Yeah but we could finish 5th and still qualify for CL (if we have one of the top 2 coefficients across Europe).
Based on our current coefficient it's a good chance we would be high enough, but we'll drop down if we do badly in the conference.

Is it really a bad thing if we go out of this tournament?

Not sure on prize money or what competition it gets us into next season If we win it, but less games and travel means better first team for the other cups and chase for the CL.

Yes it would be embarrassing for a few weeks but would be forgotten if it helped our league form. Can't remember the last time we weren't in Europe but wonder if it would help.
Only embarrassing if you give any kind of a fudge what other people think.

Yeah... Winning stuff. Why bother when we can finish 6th in the league instead. No wonder this club never wins anything, when this is the attitude.
If this competition helps us progress and move on to the next level then I'm all for it in the end. Games early on in the season with fringe players isn't a bad thing in the long run. [emoji848]

Yeah, because we've won so much in the last 20 years, that actually caring about a competition we can and should win, would be ridiculous. With all the glory we've had, this is so beneath us. Pfft!
Didn't we win the Audi cup or something? Far more prestigious than this.

Can't believe Nuno disregarded this. Especially when he knows teams in Portugal play good football. We were unlucky at the draw and should have taken this match seriously, hope he does the home match. We have the chance to chill more in the group stage, but failing to get there would make us a laughing stalk for our rivals. Not to mention the coeff points we would lose, some prize+ticket money lost, good match time for our subs

If we'd had Kane and Ndombele playing I think we walk that. Just missing a couple of players really. Was a stretch too far without one or two more senior players. Gil and Sessgnon showed promise. Doherty and Davies were fine. Winks and LeCelco looked poor, but had little to work with. Credit Pacos, 4th in their league they worked hard, hardly created anything themsleves. We should deal with them at home no probs.

Careful, you are treading close to logic/reason here

Nuno obviously feels the squad/first 11 isn't fit/ready to put in big shifts back to back. There is zero chance picking that squad he didn't (before the game) accept a 0-0/0-1 or even 0-2 result could happen.

Win the game against wolves, 6 points on the board, probably supplement this team slightly for 2nd leg, take care of business.

From the game itself, we were just too slow tempo wise, nothing we didn't know -> Doherty, Winks, CCV not up to level against any opposition, Romero, Gil, Lo Celso, Sessegnon all need game time (one of the reasons this competition is relevant). Opposition really had one chance, it happens ..

Seems he got it right to me - we're a goal down with a home game to come where we'll play the first team and likely get the result we need.

Plus the players left at home will be better prepared for Sunday

It's typical of football fans and journos and what have you to put way too much into a game like today because they don't have anything else to talk about - this game will be forgotten within a couple of weeks anyway. We played with lots of youngsters and players who've barely played together. Yeah, we were brick, but there's a second leg and it was a calculated risk.

Not worried at all. Next.

Exactly, anyone really thinks in a situation where the Kane issue is unresolved, Nuno wouldn't trade a week of rest and prep for Wolves for his first 11 at the cost of a 1-0 deficit to team that lost on the road to Larne?

Losing is never good, but this is as close to acceptable as it gets.

Nothing wrong with arrogance.
Only if you have something to be arrogant about. Why is it United, Liverpool, Chelsea win these lesser European tournaments but some of us are happy with constant failure. It's only ever so slightly dampened the mood from the weekend but it's dampened it none the less. The other 'big' teams wouldn't have lost this tonight.

First of all we lost coeff points losing here. 2nd people already took for granted the portuguese team once and they beat us, they might surprise us again. 3rd he only had to take another 3-4 players for us to have a decent first 11 and he didn't and lost. 4th, they could have beaten us even harder with some luck, interesting what you and others would have said then. Looks like the LUCKY win with an unprepared City got people thinking we are some sort of high quality team... Remember that Zagreb gave this "quality" team 3-0, and Zagreb were beaten 3-0 by a Moldavian team yesterday. We are not a lot better than Pacos, and even with our current first 11 we would have a tough time going through.

As long as it's a rule we should be playing to it.
Increasing our chances

You'll have to explain to me what a world without deserving to feel arrogant feels like.

Please, these guys struggled at times with fudging Sessegnon & Gil, Lucas and Son would absolutely murder them.

They had one fudging shot that required saving, you think this side could play our first 11 away and give us a tough time?

Our team is effectively still in preseason, Nuno took a gamble that probably including accepting exactly this result, you get to judge that after the 2nd leg, win against Wolves and win the second leg to go through and it's justified, lose either and he's up for the criticism, that's what he gets paid to do.
