Official - Holtby

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Redknapp originally lured Defoe to Pompey in 2008, for a deal worth up to £12m, when he was in charge at Fratton Park.

Defoe was paraded before the Spurs fans ahead of their home 4-1 Carling Cup first-leg semi-final win over Burnley, even though the Premier League had yet to approve the deal.

Rule L19 forbids players returning to clubs within a year, but the League can waive this at its discretion.

BBC Radio 5 Live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis explained: "From my understanding a sell-on clause worth about £4m by Portsmouth has been waived.

"While the package is £15m the initial outlay isn't even double figures in terms of millions. Any transfer upwards of £10m, Spurs must announce to the Stock Exchange and there has been no listing of this transfer."

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

hopefully an american knocked his grandmum up, then i'd like to see a push to bring him on to the 2014 World Cup Winners =D>

He has already played a competitive match for Germany. Stop dreaming in both cases.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Ive seen that line being trotted out a lot, link me to where all the other £10m+ deals were "announced on the stock exchange" and maybe I'll buy it. Perhaps like with most fees, it's paid in installments, rather than one lump sum so there wasn't £10m or more ever going out of the club in one hit.

Defoe cost £15m, sorry.

The 10m figure is total crap.. I used to work at the London Stock Exchange in the RNS (Regulatory news service) team, one of my roles was to cover the advising on , the receiving and passing on of announcements from companies to the "Market" and other internal teams.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Wunderbar. This is the type of quintessential 'Levy' signing that, oddly enough, Levy hasn't been able to pull off for the last few years. Tidy little player, only 22, on a free transfer. Doesn't get much better than that.

I think credit has to go to both AVB and Steffen for this one. AVB because he was apparently impressive enough to make up Holtby's mind for him (according to his agent, anyway), and Steffen because he would undoubtedly have recommended Holtby to Spurs in the first place, given that he was signed in part for his knowledge of the German youth system.

All in all, tremendously happy with this signing. However, it doesn't alter the fact that at this moment, we still haven't strengthened our squad for the second half of the season. Fryers is a long-term prospect, and Holtby's only arriving in July. Levy's been brilliant so far in the window, and I hope he goes on to secure that one signing (or two, a man can dream after all!) that will truly give us the best chance possible to finish the season in the top four and fight for a trophy.

Re: Lewis Holtby

Hello all,

I'm an S04 fan so I figured I'd register to clear up some of your questions etc

Also, I follow Tottenham in England and have been to WHL several times to see them play, so as I'm resigned to losing him I hope that he does end up at Tottenham.

-Someone said that he has played as a winger for us, and this isn't true. He played in the DM last year as a ball winning mid / deep lying playmaker (to use Fifa terms), though he was used on the wing on occasion for Mainz.
- He has been playing as AMC this year and been thriving in the role, but his favoured position is actually DM so Spurs could be signing him with a view to playing there (perhaps in the 4-3-3 formation
- I have seen the website stating he is a good dribbler / likes to dribble and I don't know where this has come from, he is not a player who runs with the ball much. He is capable of beating a defender, but 9 times out of 10 he will play the pass or a through ball.
-Many have been saying 'is he good enough to start' and 'is he an improvement on the current squad' and the simple answer is yes. I think it's likely that we will see Sandro/Parker, Dembele and Holtby playing behind Bale, Lennon and Defoe.
-Don't expect Moutinho to sign as well they take up the same position.
- His playing style is most similar (though I hate to say it) to Wheelchair and Modric though he is a better ball winner than both of those
- I would expect him to sign a pre-contract deal also given how much we all know Levy likes his bargains, plus Schalke don't want to be rushed into making signings in January and would rather take until the summer to scout out a replacement and January deals aren't common in the Bundesliga.
- Also someone said that he didn't play well against Arsenal and isn't quick enough. Though he wasn't at his best he did still play well against them, at least in the second leg (2 assists - I was there - see attached picture

and sometimes a player who thinks quickly is better than a player who runs quickly and that is what Lewis offers.

Of course, Tottenham are the best team in England to watch without doubt, haven't missed a game in years. If I was to compare Holtby and Sigurdsson I would say Holtby is probably a lot more rugged and isn't afraid to do the 'dirty work' ie tracking back, putting in a challenge and doing his defensive duties. Holtby is able to play further back where as I would say Sigurdsson only really thrives in advanced positions. They're both good passers of the ball and that's probably their best attributes but I can see Holtby fitting into Spurs' lineup better than Sigurdsson has so far despite the fact he hasn't got premier league experience.

As someone else said, Holtby is perhaps more of a replacement for Parker, so though players like Parker and Sigurdsson will hopefully welcome the competition, it'll be difficult for them to get in the starting line up ahead of Lewis I would think - he is German under 21 captain after all

I just hope Freund's German connections will help see the deal through and though he hasn't coached Holtby directly I'm sure he's well aware of his talents, and apparantly Freund even said regarding Holtby - "By all means we are a club with great interest".

The biggest competition for his signatures I would imagine would be Everton because of his well publicised support of them but they're yet to make an offer I believe!

As for his wage, I don't think he rejected our €50,000 offer because he wanted more money. Schalke fans have been expecting him to depart at some point as he was quoted as saying that he wanted to play in England as soon as he was good enough and his progress has been very fast so this isn't a surprise. It's why I didn't get him on the back of my shirt but hopefully maybe I can get him on a Spurs one instead!

Who are you quoting, Rossi?
That is one fantastic post. That is the standard you would expect for a proper scouting report.
Excellent.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Are you even reading what i posted?

At the time Tottenham Hotspur was a PLC so all deals over £10m had to be announced via the stock exchange and the Defoe deal wasn't meaning the deal was worth less than £10m.

No it wasn't a set figure of £10m that had to be announced, it was actually any deals at or above 10% of the turnover stated in our last submitted accounts.

Hence why we had to declare the Jenas transfer despite it only being £7m

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Thanks Jordinho. Now can you put it to rest rossi.

As a rule, football reporters have little knowledge or understanding of matters relating generally to finance or more specifically to the responsibilities of publicly quoted companies. I dare say that Ian Dennis is no exception to that rule.

Because Ginola99 is correct. The £10 million figure was a figment of some football reporter's imagination. And ever since then, all the other football reporters have trotted out the same figure whenever a similar occasion arose. That's what passes for research in the football writing world.

As far as I'm aware, there is not - nor has there ever been - some random transfer figure that triggers the requirement for a publicly quoted football club to make an announcement to the stock exchange. There has only ever been the requirement - which applies to all publicly quoted companies - to make an announcement about any changes that are likely to have a material effect on the share price one way or the other.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

we really don't need moutinho now .... and perhaps the funds could go elsewhere

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

This guy is going to do so well for us.

A big part of what makes a player successful isn't just his talent, it's how well he fits into the set up he will be joining. What makes Holtby stand out is his versatility, work-rate, fitness, close control and ability in tight spaces. He will be absolutely perfect in the AVB system next season. Can't wait.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Just to remind everyone of who really makes these deals happen, replica jerseys with his number will feature the name Joe Lewis Holtby.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

It's getting a bit crowded in the midfield don't you think? Chelsea and us cornering all the available cm's.

won't be so crowded when Hudd, Livermore and Parker leave between now and the beginning of next season. We should have a Champions League campaign to cater for.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Probably play left if Bale does go, or playmaker if he doesn't. His versatility alongside his skills and mental fortitude will stand him in good stead. A complete left-field signing for me, Zaki too, but sounds like a couple of exciting youngsters .
