Official - Holtby

He's certainly saying all the right things. Can't wait to see him, hope its this month rather than July.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

I wonder if the fee we get from Livermore goes onto bringing in Holtby early.

Spurs have already agreed a deal to sign Schalke’s Lewis Holtby on a free transfer in the summer.

There have been suggestions that the Lilywhites could bring the 22-year-old to White Hart Lane this month on a cut-price deal, but Villas-Boas says Tottenham are currently intending to stick to their original plan.

“When you reach an agreement with a player that is a free transfer in the summer, there is always that possibility,” he said. “The club can see it as a way to profit during the January transfer window.

“But we have an extremely balanced squad and we are not looking to further strengthen our midfield at the moment.

“Lewis is a player of tremendous potential that we are extremely happy to have. He has been tremendously educated in his football, he has lots of experience for a young player and is the Germany Under-21 captain.

But it is not the right moment to bring him in. It is not impossible but it is not something we are looking to do.”

How much of a fee can we realistically extract from a loan deal (serious question)?

I have always thought it depends on the situation. We don't want to send him on loan, a team wants him on loan.

I'd have thought in the above scenario its more than likely that the cost might be the value of him as a player. Say you think he is worth 8m. Say the average contract is 4 years. That would be 2m a year loan fee for me. 6months would be 1m... plus they pay wages.

If we are sending a player to develop like Naughton, Walker.. then I'd imagine we would waive the loan fee.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Agree with AVB that it isn't the right moment to bring him in. Much easier for the player to settle and integrate with the squad if he joins in the summer, new culture new coaching stuff all the fitness regime differences, I think it's a big ask to try and take in all of that and be at your best on the pitch otherwise be rated a flop, for such a young player it's best he stays and plays in Germany, hopefully the fans will stick with him over there.

But I'm not sure if AVB really doesn't want to bring in a midfielder, with the Europa games and FA cup alongside the premier league games which get more and more crucial as we come to the latter stage of the season I don't see enough depth that we can depend on. Really hope Huddlestone can prove me completely wrong when he gets the chance, Dembele won't be able to play all of our remaining games.

Really nice article. The boy has Spurs connections. Good. And I love the fact that he thinks so positively and is so seriously excited about joining us:

Title deeds: Lewis Holtby reveals he signed for Tottenham to win the Premier League

Lewis Holtby believes he can win the Premier League with Tottenham next season.

Midfielder Holtby will *become Tottenham’s latest *German import after *signing a pre-contract agreement to move to White Hart Lane from Schalke at the end of the current campaign.

Schalke looked to speed-up Holtby’s move by *offering the 22-year-old for a cut-price fee this month, but Spurs described that *possibility as being unlikely.

Having chosen Spurs, ignoring *interest from Arsenal and *Liverpool, Holtby is targeting trophies in England.

Speaking *exclusively to Sunday Mirror Sport from Schalke’s winter training camp in Qatar, the German Under-21 captain said: “Tottenham have got some big aims that I want to help them achieve.

“The club has really *progressed and they are *establishing themselves as a top-four team.

“In the future, and if the *players stick around, then of course *Tottenham can *challenge for the title,” Holtby added. “I’m not predicting it will definitely happen, but it is certainly something we can aim for. I have big goals and I want to win trophies with Tottenham.

“Tottenham is the whole *package, I am convinced of that after *speaking to the manager Andre Villas-Boas and chairman Daniel Levy.

“The club, the team and the infrastructure are all superb. It’s a quality set-up. That’s where Tottenham should be, up the top and I’m so excited that I will be a part of it.

“If you are asking me who the *exciting Spurs *players are, then I would have to name the whole team because it’s full of stars.

“To play with and compete with these guys will improve my game, for sure.”

Holtby will follow in the *footsteps of former German stars Jurgen Klinsmann, *Christian Ziege and the club’s assistant manager Steffen *Freund by moving to Spurs.

But Holtby should not have any problems acclimatising. His father Christopher is *English and one side of his *family live within easy reach of White Hart Lane.

“I was a bit young to properly remember Jurgen Klinsmann at Tottenham, but I know he is a legend of the club,” said *Holtby.

“He joined the club with big expectations and everybody thought ‘he’s a German diver’. But he scored his first goal, made the dive in celebration and that made him very *popular .

“He’s a legend in Germany and at Tottenham, so it’s great to be joining the club he played for.

“I know Steffen Freund from his time working with the *German national set-up.

“We’ve had conversations and it will be good to work with him. It will also be nice to have another German lad at the club, even though I consider myself half-English.

“It shouldn’t be a problem for me to adapt. My dad’s sister, his brother and my nan live in Bedford. My cousin’s family are big Tottenham fans. I have a lot of family in the area, which will make me more *comfortable.

“There are also the German lads, Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, at Arsenal and that will make the rivalry even better for me.

“The north London derby is already something I am *looking forward to – and with those German boys it will be extra-special.”

Schalke looking to cash in on Holtby (probably nonsense)

Although Lewis Holtby has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Spurs on a free transfer when his deal with the Bundesliga club expires at the end of the season, it seems Schalke would like some money for Holtby and are prepared to let him go this month — if the price is right.

That apparenly means Everton could steal the player from under Spurs' noses in a cut-price deal, especially as the player and his Merseyside-born dad are both lifelong Everton fans. A Spurs spokesman said: “He has signed an agreement to join us in the summer and that's that. We don't know what the Schalke people's agenda is on this.”

Schalke managing director Horst Heldt said his club would sell Holtby this month as long as they had time to find a replacement. “And we are prepared to speak to Tottenham about it,” he said.

Holtby fuelled the speculation by admitting he is an avid Everton fan whose family's loyalties are with the Toffees.

He can't sign for another club now that he has an agreement with us. There has been the odd case of a player signing for two different clubs at the same time and it usually ends with a ban from FIFA. He's not available to be sold, so there's not much Schalke can do if we don't want to do an earlier transfer.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Impossible. It's a case of Schalke trying to offload him early, methinks.

If in some strange world it does happen, and Everton 'pinch him from under Spurs' noses', then they will go bankrupt trying to fight off the mammoth legal cases Levy will gleefully pile on them, and that's assuming (As Jordinho pointed out) FIFA don't intervene and simply ban the move and fine Everton themselves.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

I don't remember any big names doing it, but I see in some minor cases that players have been banned for 4 months by FIFA after signing for two different clubs at the same time.

If I remember correctly, John Obi Mikel signed for Chelsea after initially agreeing a pre-contract deal with United. United threatened to take Chelsea and Mikel to the courts, until Abramovich agreed to pay something like 16 million quid to United in return for them dropping their objections, in addition to the sum already paid out to Mikel's original club.

United dropped their complaints in that case, but I cannot imagine Levy being that generous.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

'pre contract agreement' doesn't exactly sound like it's set in stone - it may well be - but the name isn't really conclusive imv

however after reading the quotes from the mirror article that Jimmyb posted id be very surprised if Holtby changed his mind at this moment (that's even if he is allowed to) to join Everton, i know his dad is a big Toffee - which by extension makes him one as well, but he seems very impressed with THFC the manager and the chairman and most importantlty the direction in which we are heading

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

This is yet another example of gutter journalism served up by the tabloids using a selective cut of ancient quotes out of context to make up a sensationalist story.

Firstly they've got Holtby "fueling the speculation" by admitting he's an Everton fan. We all knew he was an Everton fan those quotes are from over a year ago.

Secondly they've got Shalke quoted saying they'll happily sell him to another club in Jan, except they don't, what they have quoted is Shalke general manager's response to a question weeks ago, namely, could the transfer go through in Jan. Their quote was " we'll speak to spurs about it if they want"

As to the spurs spokesman? Well that is probably BEN up a tree outside the training ground...

Plus the contract is signed with spurs and legally binding. The only reason it is called a pre-contract is because it comes into effect at the end of his Shalke contract and he can't be registered with FIFA and the Premiership as a spurs player until it comes into effect.

Terrible terrible untrue story

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Pre contract agreement sounds pretty set in stone to me. He's signed a per contract agreement meaning Everton would have to agree some sort of deal with us to break it. This just sounds like utter gonads tbh.
