New Ipad

Have you put CM9 on your touchpad yet mate? I have to say i'm surprised by how stable it is, though at the same time disappointed with the lack of development since the last alpha. Wonderful OS though, it's got the best part of WebOS (multitasking) and the best parts of androids flexibility and ecosystem, a massive improvement on the last version.
not yet mate, I'm still running CM7. I was waiting to hear somebody say exactly that. If it's stable I'll whack it on :)

Tee hee :ross:

Heard the same old school playground arguments before.

I remember as much when I bought my HTC Desire.

Android vs Apple:

Screen - Desire (800x480) LED / iPhone (480x320) LCD
Processor - Desire (1GHz) / iPhone (600MHz)
RAM - Desire (576MB) / iPhone (256MB)
Camera - Desire (5mp) / iPhone (3mp)
Display - Desire (3.7") / iPhone (3.5")
Memory Card - Desire (Micro SD) / iPhone (none)
Tethering - Desire (YES) / iPhone (NO)
Multi-tasking - Desire (YES) / iPhone (NO)
Price - Desire (FREE) / iPhone ($$$)

The Android device was *undeniably* superior in every single way. But of course the iPhone was the "best" device, because EVERYBODY had one, so it must be best.

Apple is a closed book and almost invariably "lower spec" for longer (due to the simple fact that they produce their own hardware)

And they do a bloody good job at what they do. But for somebody that's lived and breathed technology since they were 5 years old, vendors like Google make more sense. Bleeding edge tech, open standards, fast moving.....

Apple is SUPERB for relative technophobes. (Have you seen how many over 50/60s use them? That should tell you everything you need to know!)

Same thing with the iPad 2. There was a far superior Android device.

But Asus don't spend billions of dollars on tossy marketing, so unless you're in the know, you're not aware.

"The Transformer Prime is a thing of beauty. Despite being easily as thin and light as most rivals, this aluminium-clad Android tablet is far more powerful thanks to its quad-core Tegra 3 internals. This also means that smooth 1080p video playback on a tablet and console-quality gaming on Android are finally realities, and the Prime shows them off on the best tablet screen we’ve yet seen. The keyboard dock is the icing on a very tasty cake, and though there are a few concessions compared to the original Asus Eee Pad Transformer’s dock, it’s still an amazing add-on that not only makes the Prime one of the most versatile devices on the market, but also one of the longest-lasting. Quite simply, the Transformer Prime is the best Android tablet available and arguably the best tablet per se."

I recently set up one of our directors' laptop to accept RDP connections. He now almost exclusively uses his iPad - the laptop never leaves the desk.

Admittedly most of the stuff he needs to do is based on reading and replying to emails, but with an RDP connection an iPad (or other tablet) becomes quite a useful tool.

Ipad/Android also have a Citrix Receiver, so, with front facing camera's on the newer tablets, it's become quite compelling in business as well as lounge tech. At our place all Senior Management now have Ipad's and they are just waiting for Cisco Jabber ( conferencing and collarboration suite) or a.n.other and they will be assured of their place in the company.

Not sold on any tablet as yet though.

OP - Why would your girlfriend use your money to buy you a present she knows you'd absolutely hate? Or even buy 2 for that matter?

Your brand-phobia aside - perhaps the two of you should sit down and have a 1 on 1 :barnet: ;)

Because I have alot more than her, and she wasn't thinking when her friend pulled her along to Bluewater at 7am on Friday. She has cards to my accounts. We have been together for 13 years now.

I would never take a present back to a store, no matter how much I hate it. We compromised and decided to give it to my mother as a late Mothers Day present. One for us is plenty. meh!

We had the 1 on 1 last night.

She got two because the salesman told her about the facetime and she liked the idea to be in face contact with me for 24/7 as she is 8 weeks gone, she said it whilst crying last night. Talk about make me feel terrible. lol

If the Ipad grows on me we shall buy another later down the line.

Women!

It's not 100% stable - certain games don't play nicely and there is the odd force close - but it's my daily OS on it now. Best thing android did was hire the WebOS lead designer, it's so much better now because of it. Chrome on Android is well worth the update by itself too - it's fantastic, a complete reproduction of whats good about desktop chrome :)

Does it run Silverlight? - Chrome that is.

Arrgghhhh, what a complete fudging pain in the arse! I upgraded to CM9 and the sodding thing boots up with the screen lock on. I entered the screen lock once when I went onto CM7 and turned it off and have forgotten it completely. And to boot it isn't recognising my gmail credentials!

Today has just been written off as "recovery" day!

Nope, they don't actually and never had

All of their hardware is "produced" to their design. They hand pick the components and get them pulled together in a shiny skin.

They don't manufacture their own hardware. But then who does, it's all done by minimen in Taiwan / Korea / Japan.

But EVERYTHING that comes out of Apple has been designed by them, which is why their hardware very quickly goes out of date.

Fine for the layman, like yourself or Golfball, but not good for us techno hard men

I love how the real meat of my post was ignored.....AGAIN.

Laymen, LOLLOLLOLOL

They do not make hardware components - never had. All made by inferior 3rd party companies and other minions. The iMac for example is almost exclusively assembled from laptop components, bar the screeen. You pay a premium for the software/hardware integration.

Your initial statement suggested they 'produce' their own hardware which isn't correct - my initial point

The MEAT in your post has been argued a trillion times on here and I'm tired to spark that one up again but if you're keen - let's go

Well that was a ball ache, but I now have a shiny new Ice Cream Sandwich Touchpad.... and I think I prefer Gingerbread LOL!

Some of you kids have got to have a go on Onlive over Android. I've just had a go on Dirt3 over Wifi on my touchpad and it's fantastic!

Nothing LOL about it, and certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

But I grew up programming frogger, so I'm more Raspberry Pi than Apple. http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Google, as a technology flavour, is therefore more my taste.

Apple is not so good for me. But absolutely superb for those that would struggle to hook up a home cinema from scratch.

Certainly nothing to be ashamed of, but I hope you can see the difference between the user groups.

I wan't to customise under the bonnet. You are happy with the pretty skin.

Each to their own, but I've got a fit girlfriend, I don't need a pretty netbook.

Cheap in what sense? In the sense that Google have given the developers of android unrestricted freedom while Apple still try and restrict and corner the market?

It annoys me when I hear people with minimal techie knowledge come to their conclusion based on price.

These Apple fans (and I mean these people who queue to get the new product) need a fudging life in my opinion. Since the first generation the Ipad has been nothing but a larger I-Touch. Now all it has got is a new screen and people are killing themselves to get one.

Would most people go out and buy a new TV after a year of having a perfectly good one at home because someone like Sony brought out a better resolution screen? Most wouldn't yet people kid themselves into thinking they need a new Apple product. Hats of to their marketing. No wonder they have so much money in cash.

This!

Also with Apple products is (as far to my knowledge) you don't get the option to add additional memory via an SD card as you do with pretty much every Android device on the market. Therefor if you buy a 16GB iPhone, your stuck with 16GB unless you buy a new phone with more memory. By a 16GB Android and slap a 32GB SD card in it and you got yourself a 48GB device!! Apple are either missing a trick or are shamelessly ripping off their religious followers by making them "upgrade" to a whole new device should they use up all the memory

I've been using personal computers since '88, son

Half of this board probably doesn't even know what DOS looks like better yet how to de-archive an .arj game from floppy disks in sequence. So spare me your Linux gospel until it has some relevant software applications. CAD for starters would be great.

You don't need to customise if the package has been done properly first time around - you only tweak to correct others' mistakes and inadequacies. I don't need to tweak my car under the bonnet every day for it to improve because the Germans have done a proper job at the factory. That's just one way to put it

As a layman looking in, that's possibly the most tossy sentence I've ever seen written on Glory Glory... Desperately proving provenance whilst dropping in you know the new toys!

I reckon 80% of the people on this board had a go at writing Basic as kids, that's our generation mate! Anyway, top toss comment, it has made my day :D

As a side note, Raspberry Pi is a wonderful idea and I hope the schools take to it.
