I did find interesting a comment from a Chelsea fan this week which was a little throwaway but has some truth. "Since he left Brighton, they've scored twice as much as they did under him and we're scoring half as many under Potter as we did under Tuchel". As ever, there is an element of truth and an element of using stats to create a narrative.
The argument for Potter was always that he had Brighton playing great football but they just couldn't score and that must have been because he had brick strikers as their xG was always relatively high. Last year, they scored 42 goals in 38 league games under him. Since the new lad has come in, they've averaged almost 2 goals a game in 11 league games.
On the other hand, Chelsea have scored 13 goals in 12 league games since Potter's come in whereas last season they scored an average of two goals a league game.
As ever with stats, there is a counter argument...in the first six games of this season when Potter was at Brighton, they averaged almost 2 goals a game (heavily skewed by 5 goals in his last game v Leicester) and Chelsea only averaged 1.3 goals under Tuchel so you could say that both Chelsea and Brighton have continued as they were since he switched clubs.
The stats are inconclusive but it'll be interesting to see over the course of the season and beyond if Potter's Chelsea continue to underperform in front of goal and if there is an element of "Emperor's New Clothes" about him.
