Jan Vertonghen

Thats what I was thinking, he's played 5 PL games, out of 9....

Rubbish, isn't it? ****ing brain dead journos have lost the run of themselves in an lame attempt to file original copy. Who would have thought it?

As for Jan, AC Milan might actually be his level but he's not going anywhere. I think he'll be here for a few more seasons if not longer. He is not good enough for the top clubs really, and certainly doesn't have the mentality to play at somewhere like Chelsea for example. He may be our best CB but that is more an indictment on our poor options at CB rather than Jan's outstanding ability.

verts is our best CB in the same way that Ade is our best CF and Dembele is our best CM, all the ability, all the physical attributes, sadly none of the mental requirements

Unfortunately true. Hopefully Poch can work some magic with these guys and get the best out of them. It might be too late for Ade as he's 31 in Feb but I still have hope for the other two.

It is definately that mental aspect that seperates the truely top players from the also-rans.

It's that absolute failure to give up.

Plenty of times i saw (or what I thought) King done by skill or pace and other defenders might have just let the attacker go, there were plenty of times where King just did not accept that he was going to let the attacker get the better of him, he'd bust a gut to get back and the amount of times i saw him get unbelieveable or impossible seeming last-ditch tackles and blocks in was incredible.

Jan is more of the category where if the team is playing well and he's feeling good about everything, he looks a world-beater, but if it's a bit rocky and things aren't quite going his or the team's way, he likes to hide and pass responsbility onto others, probably thinking he needs to be somewhere better and its not his fault etc.

Sees he's willing to see his contract out rather then sign a new one. Another Campbell on the cards here

Excellent observation. In fact, almost every one of our players has a weak mentality. Why is that? Can we only attract those type of players?

I don't think it will be the same as Campbell for a variety of reasons. One is his age. He'll be 28 in April and with 4 more years on his contract that'll see him into his 30's. So unless he has a storming season and big bid comes in, which is probably unlikely, then he'll be knocking around for a while yet.

And RSol came through the Academy, was club captain and swore up and down he was staying then ****ed off to the Goons on a free. Cnut.

Closer to the time of expiring we'd almost certainly look to sell him, assuming he shows no sign of wanting to re-sign.

The way i see it, we wanted to tie him down but from his perspective it wouldn't be in his interest to do so with so long left on his current deal - a wage hike and extension would put him in a poor position should he ever want to leave in the future. I don't think it's as big a deal as others seem to.

From his comments in September I think he already wants to leave. Fact he was negotiating a new deal and now has said no says to me he's not impressed with the way the clubs going and who can blame him tbh. We were well off top 4 finish last season and from what I can see we didn't go out and buy anything to improve what so ever just cheap available no ambition signings. People say money is all that matters but IMO ambition of club is just as important.

Then why didn't he put in a transfer request? Or why wan't there any genuine interest from other clubs? If he wanted to leave his agent would have let the relevant clubs know and offers would have come in and stories would have been leaked to the press.

It's just less interesting that he's happy to see out his current contract for the time being and re evaluate in a year or so time.

Not many footballers put in transfer requests as they lose money doing so. I find it strange that this situation was made public as you hear rumours of contract negotiations stalling but not often statements saying they won't sign a new deal. A footballer turning down more money/better terms....something is wrong there.

i already addressed that - Vertonghen had, at the time of the quotes, 4 years remaining on his contract - signing an extension would put him in a poor position if in a couple of years he wanted a move, (or a wage rise if we were in the CL or whatever) he has to protect his interests. i could understand the worry from fans if he had 2 years left but with 4 years on his contract - i take it at face value (he's happy here atm and happy with his current deal, as he said) - i mean how often do you see players tie themselves down for longer than that anyway? he's basically got the contract of a new signing. really is nothing to see here afaic

He does not get enough criticism on here. He is vastly overrated and a poor defender who does not give a ****. There is a reason he is not even third choice for Belgium at CB.

Is part of the reason for that the lack of good left backs leading to him having to play in that position and the shortcomings of current cloning technology?

I have not posted on here for months and months but do occasionally look in and read the many sensible and valid posts, but nothing has changed with you at all Braindead still the same "strawman" posts that are slightly arrogant and condescending but definitely totally devoid of content.
