Funny thing is he has never been called up by his own nationality and was even begging the Argentinian coach to pick him a year or two ago.

No it isn't. Banter is making a joke, sometimes at anothers expense. But it isn't meant to be hurtful.
If you are at a lowpoint and someone has a dig about it. At best it is insensitive, but more likely malicious. Especially if it's done in front of the world.

I think Southgate's decision is a fair one given performance levels after the injury. Perfectly content to see Maddison sit the Euros out. Good opportunity to rest, repair and restore his body in preparation for next season. Come back strong and motivated.
