I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

He needs premier league games to get used to it.
This is not something hes gonna learn in training or the europa league.
We're not gonna get top 4 this season anyway so ****ing play him.

I would compare him to Hazard in his first season. Hazard is obviously a better player, but he did some pretty lame and naive things in his first season. But he has adapted and is a totally different player now. Lamela has only started 13 league games. He will come good!

him and Kane the only ones looking like making something happen in the final 3rd tonight

Agreed. Thought we lost a fair bit of creativity after Lamela came off. Was really rather excellent in that opening 20 minutes when we played very well as a team. Faded a bit after the 2-0 punch in the face like the rest of the team, but did alright all in all.

Of the front 6 only Bentaleb had more passes than Lamela's 52 and Lamela had a 92% success rate with his passing. Those numbers in isolation won't say anything definite, but worth a mention none the less.

Anyone noticed how he rolls the ball under his feet when he's moving forward? I can't help to think that it's an disadvantage if you want to do something, let's say, unexpected. Btw, I really hope he will find his way with us and he's clearly a talented footballer.

I find myself wanting more from Lamella, but the criticism he is getting is becoming way over the top. He is one of the very few that can create something out of nothing, meaning that he takes risks when on the ball and thus loses the ball more than those playing it safe all the time. He got unfair criticism when coming off the bench against Everton, its not easy coming into the game off the bench and still showed plenty of energy and I like the fact that when he tries something and it doesnt come off it doesnt deter him from trying it again.

I bet that come this time next year a lot of things that currently arent coming off will be coming to fruition next year, and he will be a much more productive player....

What are they supposed to do when they come off the bench then?? They are professional footballers ffs.

Are you having a laugh? Hazard had 9 goals and 11 assists his first season

I think Lamela is a difficult problem to solve....

I think some of the criticism he gets compared to other players is a little harsh (and I myself am guilty of this) but equally some of the ways that he loses the ball are infuriating.

He probably does need games to develop and become more effective, but his play at the moment isn't really conductive to us giving him that time.

There is also the issue that we simply look a better team when Lennon plays on the right and picking a player who doesn't deserve his place is something that creates serious squad disharmony.

I think for the time being Lamela should be on the bench and brought on for Lennon as the right midfielder or for Kane as the number 10 depending on the circumstances. If he then does well from the bench he can start to challenge Lennon/Kane for a place in the starting line-up.

If we should get a good offer for him in January then Pochettino should get the whole say on whether he thinks the player is worth persevering with or he would rather have his transfer fee to spend on another player.

I believe that to a lesser extent, this thread is heading down a similar path to the Ade thread, i.e. fan has a pop at Lamela, not contributing enough etc, poster replies and overstate his performances to counter balance the negative things said about him. Let me be clear, I'm not saying he's played as bad as Ade, I don't think that's possible.

He will probably need all of this season and maybe most of next season too before he blossoms so I would not want to sell him in January or in the summer. But for now, he fights for his place.

In an attempt to not overstate his performances then. How did you think he did yesterday compared to Eriksen, Lennon and Chadli (and to some extent Paulinho, Mason and Bentaleb)?

Lamela has by and large been pretty pants in the league, let's face it. I hope he can pick up the pace of the game soon but I'm beginning to think this may well end up being a case of right player, wrong league.

In a team with competant strikers, capable defensive midfielders and a fairly well established team style. Makes settling in and performing just a wee bit easier wouldn't you think?

I like him and he clearly has talent yet I am starting to see him as brain dead. He looks to me like a flat out 10 and loos best when he has his head up, is popping it off early and keeping it simple as he does have quality. However, he does things in the wrong areas, struggles to beat men due to his lack of physicality or super pace and keeps making the wrong decisions.

Moving forward i would be open to offers as maybe its a case of him not fitting in with us. Hope he comes good but I am growing a little worried that he won't be able to show it with us.

PS. He was very average last night and deserved to come off

Isnt that just an easy thing to say to excuse how poor he has been ? Why does someone with (apparently) so much skill and ability need games to get used to the premier league when "lesser" players for other teams join the premier league and hit the ground running ?

Dont get me wrong, obviously the more experience you get in this league will always improve you, but the truth is that what we have seen from Lamela so far has just not beem good enough. Its not acceptable.

You can of course call it an excuse. But the fact is that a rather large number of players do need time and games to fit into a new league and/or a new team. I don't see it as an excuse, just a good reason to be patient with a young player with a lot of talent whose also putting in a lot of effort. I don't see Modric THFC making excuses in the post you quoted, and I haven't seen many other posters doing so either. Is there a way one can call for a player to be given time without it sounding like an excuse to you?

What do you mean by not acceptable? In what way do we or the club go about not accepting it?

leagues apart in my opinion Hazard has shown much more end product and being in general much more dangerous
