I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Lamela needs to improve a lot ofcourse. But the way he took both the goals will boost his confidence surely. Also, don't think you can expect him to play well for the whole match. He is not the sort of player who can play well all the time. As long as he changes a game with a crucial goal or assist, we should be happy with him. For now, happy with him for his wonder goal. Hope he can score many such goals.

Exactly. It is a moment in history. Not many players have scored like that or will score like that in future. In fact, I feel that goal alone deserves it's own thread to discuss, share and post anything about it.
 
Erik Lamela 'Rabona' goal deserves Puskas award , says Jan Vertonghen

Erik Lamela scored an absolute beauty from 20 yards out to give Tottenham an early 2-0 lead over Asteras Tripoli in the Europa League.
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen believes Erik Lamela's stunning "Rabona" strike against Asteras Tripolis has already won the attacker the Puskas award for the best goal of 2014.

Lamela, 22, planted his right leg and wrapped his left foot around to strike the ball into the far corner of the net for Spurs' second goal in Thursday night's 5-1 Europa League victory.

FIFA hands the Puskas award to the player deemed to have scored the most beautiful goal of the year, and Vertonghen -- as with the majority of White Hart Lane -- was left shocked by the technique shown by Lamela.

"I was stunned, for two minutes I was just thinking about that goal," he told reporters after the game. "It is 100 percent the best goal I've seen live. I've seen a lot of YouTube clips but I've never seen a goal like it. I think the Puskas award is already his."


FIFA president Sepp Blatter introduced the award in 2009 in honour of Ferenc Puskas -- the legendary Real Madrid and Hungary striker of the 1950s and 1960s -- with past winners including Cristiano Ronaldo (2009), Hamit Altintop (2010), Neymar (2011), Miroslav Stoch (2012) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2013).

Argentina international Lamela -- who posted a replay of the goal on Instagram -- played down the skill involved in the goal, saying: "I don't know how to explain it. Goals like this are just instinctive -- I got lucky.

"Maybe my right foot is not very good so I had to use my left!"

Wonder-goals are all very nice and that, even in one-sided affairs like last night's game, and well done to the kid. Personally, mind you, and this may appear churlish, but I'd like to see more consistency from him when it comes to the basics, rather than occasional headlines for showboating. I sometimes find myself thinking, "Head-up player, Lamela, moves well, always looks very alert, constantly glancing sharply around, gauging the positions of every man around him, then playing a precision pass ...straight to an opposing player." I'm looking forward to seeing him produce the goods more consistently, and in the bread and butter of the league, especially.
 
He does give the ball away a lot and seems to fluff the easy passes, but I see something in him, once it all clicks he could be special, but yes, at the moment he's frustrating.

All true. But its really his first season with us. Last season was a write off. So like any new international signing he needs at least one full season to get used to the prem and show his full worth. There is no doubt he has the technical ability. When he marries that with the speed of the EPL and the Roughness he could be a star.

You missed the most important part.......................
 
Think yesterday did wonders for his confidence - he looked very cautious and anonymous before that goal, but improved a lot afterwards IMO. All of a sudden he didn't look as afraid to take on players or burst forward, which resulted in another well taken goal for him.

He still has a lot to work on (should have released the ball on the counter attack earlier, for intstance), but let's take it one step at a time. Yesterday I think was a good leap forward for him. Next up is a similar performance in the PL, against better opposition. It will come.

Had a WHU fan at work today saying that the goal really wasnt that good and that Lamela will be a nothing player and wasn't worth £10m

He does over complicate at times and like a show boat, but he can strike a ball, is quite powerful and he's quick. Reminds me of the early days of a young Potugese lad who used to play for United... If only he develops on the same trajectory [-o<
 
So, a few things

- Much better game from him after a poor performance against City
- When he hit it, I was sitting there going "wtf? did he really do that in a European competition"

To me the piece most people are missing is the mindset to do that after a year and a half of struggling, a better start to this season but the goals not coming, and you still have the audacity to even try it, and you pull it off.

The special players have to believe in themselves, they have to be willing to go for it, yesterday Lamela could have hid after a poor City performance, tried to play it safe, do the simple stuff, instead he went for it and he should be applauded for it.

I disagree that he was having a poor game. I felt he looked decent, up for it, bright, playing sharp passes and taking men on and trying to make things happen.

I agree his timing is off and he often passes half a second too late or early, which is a concern.

But he is always aware, looking around, darting around intelligently, I think he is an excellent prospect and could be special; more promising than similarly showy players like Taraabt and Dalmat.

"The goal was important for me but also because I needed to score, any type of goal," Lamela said.

While watching the game it is obvious that he has quality but things are just not quite going for him, maybe he holds off making the pass for a split second. He is just a fraction off being a very good player for us, lets hope he can make that final step.
