Huddlestone

Nope weve had basically none all year, whilst they have had almost a full team out every week, only reason were 10 points above them

Funny thing is, a pattern has been developing for some years now...last trophy in North London was from us. Consistent top 5 finishes from us. Champions League last season from us and to the QFs. We've beaten them/remained undefeated consistently for the last few seasons. We're currently 10 points ahead of them. There is a pattern of shift which has been developing for some time...but of course let's ignore that.

Yes, we've had no injuries at all. They have suffered the tortures of the damned. Good GHod, if their glass hero had taken his annual injury sabbatical by now, can you imagine the cacophonous whining we'd all have had to endure? As of Sky...joke. I still cannot believe more has not been said about the poor luck we've had this season with regards to good goals being disallowed and 'that' game at Eastlands...still, no complaining, let's just get on with it and do what we do...

Tommy Hudd

The absence of Tom Huddlestone in midfield has been one of our greatest setbacks in pursuit of 3rd or higher.

This is no cut at Parker either, but the lack of creativity and passing from deep in midfield has generally been lacking since he's been out. The array of passes and vision Tom has could have easily helped us create more chances. His range in passing would have let us get it out to benoit, bale and walker much faster than at present and that would allow us more opportunities on the break.

In defence he's no slouch either. To my recollection, he's been used as a CB before and is more than capable of handling his defensive duties. Parker may be a bit more inclined to press an opponent or breakup play a little more but is totally clueless when going forward.

We've all seen it, Parker's best pass is one straight back where it came from, as he runs at said player. When he's in we rely too much on the creativity of VdV which causes him to drop even deeper and leaves us one less body from upfront. Hudd is able to pass it out wider or to more advanced players (position wise) and get the attack moving much quicker.

The Modric-Huddlestone partnership was good enough to get us 4th once, and imo would have definitely been good enough for a repeat. I'm unsure why this hasn't been brought up yet?

It'll be interesting to see what 'Arry or any new manager does once Tom returns, with our depth in central midfield.

couldn't find this topic anywhere, mods please delete/move if its already been discussed

Second most fan overrated player after BAE. Wouldn't get into the current team and is probably soon going to be 5th choice behind Sandro and alongside Livermore who's done really well.

Would definitely be an option.

I just think people have sussed us out. Early in the season we would break up play in midfield (plaudits Parker) and the ball was moved swiftly forward to our pacey attack. Now teams sit and when they come forward retreat quickly eliminating the pace threat to a degree. Which leaves Parker to play pretty one-twos off our centre backs until either Walker or BAE push forward to create the space.

Parker is still doing the same job he was doing - in fact it's probably got easier because there is less pressure on him. Hudd could get the ball forward quicker an more accurately with this time and space, however would teams then strat to press again without Parker harrying?

Horses for courses. If we could get a Parker/Hudd Hybrid we could be onto something!

Tom Huddlestone has the potential to be a top player, he is rated on this board but generally very underrated. Hope he comes back next season and starts with Modders in the middle.

What Huddlestone offers that none of our central midfielders have is the ability to shoot from distance.
He is so dangerous popping up and hitting one on the edge of the area.

Huddlestone offers something different. Parker, Sandro and Livermore all pretty much have the same game.
In a 3 man central midfield you don't want 2 of Sandro, Livermore or Parker in the same midfield.

A midfield trio of Modric, Huddlesone and one of Parker/Sandro/Livermore has a much better balance than the midfields we have fielded this season.
We would dominate possession against any premier league midfield with those 3 in the middle.

This. Been saying for a while that when teams shut up shop against us (as most of them do) we need more creativity, not more tackling.

When Modric and Hudd play together, Modric does the pressing job very well. In fact, it means the pressing is done further up the pitch which I prefer.

That would be amazing. It would also be a world class player that would only look outside of Barca/Real for a payday at City - we have along way to go before we can get a player like that.

why is he overrated. He was a young player, he has shown he can mix it with the best but of course being a young player he wasnt going to perform week in week out.

He has outstanding ability, can shoot and pass with either foot, scores goals, is not afraid to put his foot in either. We finished 4th with him playing a regular role in centre midfield, remember we didnt even use Modric in the centre until very late on in the season. Modric was even out for a large part of that season as well. Thudd helped carry that midfield.

yes we finished 4th, something that this season, with Modric, Parker, Sandro, Livermore , we are not even sure of finishing in the top 4 now

a fit Thudd would be alongside Modric in my centre midfield. Proven to work

In reality he is 2nd choice for the passing midfielder's role. Sandro is 2nd choice for the defensive midfielder role, and Livermore 3rd choice for the defensive midfielder role.

Not good enough to be a regular for us anymore. Not that he isn't a good player but we simply have better options.
The only player who isn't good enough for us in CM is Parker. He cannot pass forward as he lacks the vision and is not on the same wavelength creatively as the other players. You could see even the CBs getting annoyed with his play. I would say even Livermore has played better than him recently without the hollywood all action style that parker appears to show. I have been consistent with my justified criticism of his play and a lot of fans now seem to be seeing what I have seen since the start of the season.

The dangerous shot that has produced 8 goals in 7 seasons? I am tired of hearing how ferocious his shot is means nothing how well he can hit them if he can't score

So basically he's forever behind Modric since we'd always have at least one DM irrespective of formation. And he's also 3/4th choice for that DM position in turn becoming joint 5th :D

Well he has a better long shooting rate of return than Parker, Livermore, Sandro and Modric.
I'm not exactly comparing him to Lampard or Gerrard here.

It's not a lack of Huddlestone, it's an overbearing amount of Parker-ness. Either Livermore or Sandro would have done a much better job last night.

When Parker was free in their box and decided to take a completely pointless touch and fall over part of me died inside last night.

why is he overrated.

Overrated doesn't mean brick. Simply indicates his perceived ability on this board is often not directly proportional to his actual performances.

Personally, I think Parker's workrate and defensive tenacity makes him an automatic starter every time alongside Modric. He's proven it many a times this season. If we want to go 3 in the middle we then have the option of Sandro / Livermore / Hudd. Sandro's energy and ability to close down players edges it for me although Hudd's range of passing can be preferred against certain oppoents, granted. We now also have Livermore who's also held his own, repsectfully so and would a real contender for a spot alongside Hudd. He has massive work to do to be considered our starting DM again.

Well if we play a 3 man midfield he'd be in there with Modric. Only lower league teams play a 3 man midfield with 2 defensive player.
