Happy St paddys day to

Or people that have joined the EDL / BNP are just bigots

Fixed that for you.

In all honesty, I've always found the hulabaloo around flags a bit hilarious. Each to their own but its just a piece of cloth. Who cares if someone wants to fly it in front of their house or wants nothing to do with it?

No one should be ashamed of our flag.

Boring? In your opinion maybe but I'm immensely proud of it and the history behind it. I'm proud to be English and I have a flag of St George on the wall behind the counter at all times. My district manager doesn't even bother trying to discuss taking it down anymore.

Your right on one point though. The vast majority of foreigners AREN'T bothered by the flag.

They aren't ashamed of the flag, they're ashamed of what and who it has become associated with.

Yes it is boring. I find all this stuff boring but for people who want to go out and have a good time, there is nothing interesting in it.

Similar to the post above, I don't get the stress about celebrating either. An English person wants to celebrate St Patrick's day (along with Canadians, Americans, French, Aussies, pretty much everyone who likes to drink....)? Its because they like having a bit of a laugh. Why get annoyed about that?

Similarly, why get annoyed if other people don't want to celebrate St Georges day? Nobody is stopping you from putting up the flag, singing the national anthem, playing Rugby and watching only fools and horses or however you want to celebrate the day. So why this same discussion every single year?

Surely then if you agree with me and Gord on this point, calling them foreigner ****s and blaming them is a little bit harsh wouldn't you say?

Calling them ****s is harsh yes. Some are most aren't I think we can agree on.

Also, to say our flag is associated with racists is completely wrong and I'm sure that's just come across wrong?

Roy, Bush Hill... I wouldn't dream of patronising you with regards to your views on foreigners. But I think it's important as hootnow always points out so well these issues are often myths and we'd do well as a country not to perpetuate these horrible stereotypes.

I'd go with realist. Whilst calling them foreign ****s may be wrong on here the fact remains that there are still companies in England that are 'scared' to celebrate St George's day for fear of upsetting non English folk.

What do you make of that?

Too easy mate, in an inordinate amount of cases, it's our own citizens who decide that foreign ****s will be offended. Most foreign ****s I know love the English flag/Union Jack. It's a symbol of hope and freedom for them.

The brick that people in the UK are willing to believe and then blame on the 'imigants' is truly shocking and laughable.

You left England for a better life right? Not starting an argument but have I got that right?

I meant that in the sense that unfortunately in the eyes of some Brits, the St Georges cross has become synonymous with the the EDL and the BNP and so they find themselves ashamed of it and unwilling to associate with it. This is a very sad state of affairs imo because if you want to celebrate your country's heritage and flag, you should be able to do so happily and not feel bad because some Luton skinheads have put the wrong images in your head.

This article above really sums it up for me.

I agree with it, our governing bodies ARE ashamed of our past. They are ashamed of everything we represent. We hide our flag as if its dirty.
Also, let me say one more word. Nationalism. Pretty okay, right? Now let me add one more word infront of it. English Nationalism. What do you think now?

Views on foreigners? Diego my view is simple. If these immigrants have come over to England from wherever simply to claim benefits (Which a % do) I think it's only right that benefit is stopped. That's it.

I've no problem with anyone coming over to work to pay their taxes in England. None whatsoever. Why my views are often dismissed as far right is incredible.

*Disclaimer - In my opinion  *

I can't remember if your the poster who moved abroad (New Zealand??) for a better life that's all.

Yup, in Oz now. I didn't leave because of foreign ****s though! London was sucking the soul right out of me. I still maintain it is the greatest city in the world, and the UK as a whole is getting it so right in many aspects. Globally, we are in a delicate position.

Has it occured to you that maybe your views are outdated, rather than a whole forum being 'left wing'...
