Grealish

So £35m for Grealish, who some on here are saying Will be as good as either eriksen or dele, in today's market is pretty decent. So why is nobody else beating villas door for him?
Both arsenal and Liverpool could do with someone like that, so where are they?

Neither of those two have any money left and maybe believe in the players they have already

So if the other top clubs are in for a player we can’t compete and if they aren’t we shouldn’t be that interested?

Grealish fits our model (buy young and develop them) more than the other top sides. Also in a market where Sissoko is 30m and Richarlson is 50m, this boy is at least worth 30 which will probably be good enough to get him.

Grealish isn’t even the type of signing Poch was talking about when he said “be brave”. The fact we can’t get it done doesn’t bode well.

Even signing him at this stage is a bit disruptive. We could have integrated him pre season if we were doing our business right.

Agreed, £30m is about right. Our offer of £20m, assuming the press reports are correct, is very hopeful

But what if doing our business right also has to square with not over paying?

Sure, we could probably players earlier, but that in turn could mean we couldn’t offer Kane or Poch the contracts that we did.

It’s a balance, and generally the club does it pretty well.

Kind of? And this is the whole point - we need players at "their" level to improve our team, but cannot compete toe to toe on them.

Right, so he is more of a punt, a "lets get him in and give him a chance to grow" signing. An N'Jie, N'Koukdou, if you will. How much do you want to spend again?

His club were under threat of administration, and so were obviously holding for a huge premium.
Then they went through a take over.
Only now are they starting to become "operational" again.

How easy do you suppose this is?

Or is your answer always going to be "Just spend what it takes to get it done early"?

Exactly. If we think we can get a player worth 20m that will improve our squad, we either have a very low opinion of our squad or we aren’t living in the real world. The market has moved on.

No, but each player has value to us, why pay more. His value to villa is obviously more than it would be for us.
You dont know what poch was meaning with his be brave comments.
Our business right, yeah because you just pick the players you want and get them, the club who OWNS them has no say.
Villa were going through a change of ownership and potential new manager, no one was getting sold until that was sorted.

Has done it well historically I agree, however our strategy with transfers of leaving it to the last week is very high risk given that we dont have time to move to alternative targets if something causes one deal to fall over. If it works out then the 'only' downside is the lack of pre-season preparation and disruption for the first few games. If it doesn't the you have to get through the first 20-odd games before having the chance to remedy it

I think you can be reasonably sure what Poch meant. It certainly wasn’t “keep doing what we’ve always done.”

Villa will put a higher price on him, we’ll put a lower price and we meet somewhere in the middle. Looking at the market, this boy is worth around 30m. Levy always seems to hold out to get the lowest possible price no matter the disruption or causes or if it means we miss out (Moutinho and Berahino).

Villa also have to find 50m to balance the books for ffp so there is pressure on them to sell.

Buying players isn’t easy but it’s part of Levys job. We are the only club who pretty much always leave this stuff to the last minute in the hope the other club blink first and it’s hurting us.

Yes, there are plenty who came in late. Though its arguable the players that are key players tend to come in sooner.

Late in the window moves are generally more speculative.

Although, clearly, "We always leave it late by design" doesnt really stack up, does it?

We aren’t gonna get City/United/Liverpool level players just by holding out. We generally go after players that are young and have the potential to develop that other clubs aren’t patient enough to wait on (Sanchez, Alli, Dier) or players that are largely unproven at the top level from other leagues (Jan, Aurier, Son). Grealish is firmly in the former category and is a bit of a punt like Njie, Nkoudou or even Dier or Alli. The fact he’s played in the English leagues for a few seasons should mean we have a better idea of what we are getting. And the way the market has gone means he’s worth more than 20m. If he wasn’t, we shouldn’t even be considering him.

It isn’t easy to just sign a player but that’s Levys job and we’re the only club who’ve signed no one. Villa are also under huge pressure to sell.

Also, the point of a new stadium was to allow us to compete with other top clubs. We’re not doing that because the chairman seems to be too risk averse and wants to squeeze every penny out of every deal regardless of the consequences.

Well actually, we do. Remember VDV? Arguably Moura just this January, just because PSG got a new toy and sidelined him dont forget just how highly rated he is.

Its been detailed all over this forum how waiting can be a benefit - we have done it before as well, which makes it all the more bizarre people refuse to accept it.

And while you admit to Grealish being an NJie type buy (£10m if memory serves) - do you really think "Just pay the money" is the right way to go on him?

We give Villa the £30-40m they demand, "just because", and then what? What do you suppose Utd will do when we go knocking for Martial? Or will we go knocking for Marital having blown half our budget on an NKoudou?

EDIT : And the stadium isnt even open yet - how are we supposed to be spending more right now?

It was a figure of speech not a statement of fact. We bring a lot of deals into the last week of the window and have a well earned reputation for it.

Last season we were amongst the last to sign anyone. This season, after the manager asked Levy to be brave, we’re 5 days out and the only club to sign nobody.

Levy will get some deals done, I’ve no doubt but we’re still operating as we always have.

Right. But while you'll spend days bemoaning this "strategy", the actual details dont really support it.

Most of our late business seems to be supplemental, not essential.

Key players are most often brought in sooner. This window is something of an outlier in that respect.

Although, you have to wonder what "key" business we have right now. Anything absolutely essential is dependent on sales first.

I was thinking the other day I don’t recall many deadline day signings in recent years but didn’t have any stats to back it up so kept quiet. Good post....

We got some players in that were big additions to the squad, but for the most part the players that made immediate contributions came in sooner...

I’ll give you VDV. Jury is out on Moura.

Grealish is as much an Alli or Dier type as an Njie type and the market has gone nuts since we signed Njie for 10m.

No one has said 40m. Press reports say they want 35m. You’d probably get him for 30m which isn’t a bad price. But Levy is holding out for less.

You keep saying he’s an Njie or Nkoudou. Why not an Alli or Dier?

This is the point on being brave. You don’t need to wait for the stadium to open and get the money in the bank. Levy knows he has a revenue stream that will make him a lot more money in the future. He can start spending against that now and, if it goes well, we make more through on pitch performance than we ever would by sitting on our hands waiting for the money to roll in.

That’s taking a risk and being brave. Levy is being overly cautious.
