We aren’t gonna get City/United/Liverpool level players just by holding out. We generally go after players that are young and have the potential to develop that other clubs aren’t patient enough to wait on (Sanchez, Alli, Dier) or players that are largely unproven at the top level from other leagues (Jan, Aurier, Son). Grealish is firmly in the former category and is a bit of a punt like Njie, Nkoudou or even Dier or Alli. The fact he’s played in the English leagues for a few seasons should mean we have a better idea of what we are getting. And the way the market has gone means he’s worth more than 20m. If he wasn’t, we shouldn’t even be considering him.
It isn’t easy to just sign a player but that’s Levys job and we’re the only club who’ve signed no one. Villa are also under huge pressure to sell.
Also, the point of a new stadium was to allow us to compete with other top clubs. We’re not doing that because the chairman seems to be too risk averse and wants to squeeze every penny out of every deal regardless of the consequences.
