Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

I've not stated anything about loyalty, where have i stated loyalty?

What i do believe means something is that pesky bit of paper that Bale's contract is written on.

Haven't you cottoned on to the fact that contracts mean diddly squat nowadays.

Re: Gareth Bale

How many players have we had in recent seasons that opposing teams genuinely dread playing against? The type of player they really don't want to see on the team sheet. Last season we even had Chelsea and Utd players coming out with comments like 'We're not afraid of Bale' as if trying to convince themselves.

There are some reasonable arguments about building a more balanced and complete squad but the fear factor is something the top sides have which we won't. Arsenal lost that when they sold RVP despite some decent signings.

Re: Gareth Bale

The contracts mean an awful lot really. The players have power, but they can't simply break their contracts.

As we have seen over and over again, once a player wants to leave, a contract means very little.

the probelm we had last season was that we became a one man team. Stop Bale, stop Spurs. Of course, because of Bale's outrageous brilliance to score goals out of nothing we managed to get by. However it can only go on for so long. I also felt that even our own players started to believe that Bale would pull us out of the mire no matter what and they themselves stopped contributing.

Bale reached a level that he was way better than those around him. Thats not healthy imo. We need to be dangerous from more than one player, more than one area. With the signings weve made so far i think that would have been the case and with Bale also we could have been title contenders. Now, if he goes, and we get in a top replacement, i still think we will be top 4 challengers but not have just that bit extra that a world superstar can add.

Re: Gareth Bale

Ah yes, just like when Modric wanted to go to Chelsea.

And yes, we staved it off for a year, but he still went. Against this, I give you Carrick, Berbs, Keano, Cole, RVP, Nasri, Fabragas, Ronaldo... And even Soldado. The list goes on and on.

Exactly, and we would be able to stave Real Madrid off Bale for a year if we wanted.

Re: Gareth Bale

Lamala would be great but unlike our Gareth, he's publicly stated he wants to stay at his club for the foreseeable.

well Gareth was meant to be staying another season until Real started the campaign to take him from us, so who knows, maybe a few sweet words from Baldini, a big offer for Roma, and a contract for Lamela which is 3 times what he is earning and he too might have a change of heart;)

Sorry mate, but I don't buy this argument. With the additions we've already made and Bale, we wouldn't rely so much on him as we did last season, but still have the threat of a brilliant player. We'd be more than simply top four contenders, IMO.

Obviously we don't know if Soldado, Paulinho og Chadli will succeed, but I'm confident they bring more quality to the team than we had last season. It would make it a much bigger risk for teams to commit 2-3 players to stop Bale, if they know we have other quality players to exploit the space that would create.

Contracts mean relatively little if by meaning something you're talking about players staying for the duration of the contract. There are exceptions of course, quite a few actually, but you have to be utterly naive to believe that just because a player signs a four year contract that means that he will stay with the club for four years. No is saying that.

Contracts mean a hell of a lot when transfer fees are being agreed though. No way Schalke would have let Holtby go for the price we got him for, or Arsenal would have let RvP go for what United got him for if they had 2+ years left on their contracts. And I think it's very unlikely that Real would even consider bidding £80m+ for Bale if he had just a year left on his contract.

So contracts to actually mean a lot, as long as you're not talking about the player staying for the duration.

Re: Gareth Bale

Not if Bale wants to go there now.

And if he really wanted to go now he'd have put in a transfer request..

And even if he does want to leave, it will only occur on our terms. If Real Madrid don't meet our valuation he'll be stuck.

Re: Gareth Bale

Ah yes, just like when Modric wanted to go to Chelsea.

There are several reasons why we wouldn't sell our best player to a direct rival, and for all their filthy money and scummy squad they don't possess that much more pulling power than us. If he'd wanted to go to Man Utd on the other hand, I fear we wouldn't have been able to hold on that tight.

Re: Gareth Bale

Not if Bale wants to go there now.

You mean like how Modric wanted to go to Chelsea or Berbatov wanted to go to Man utd (the summer before he did)?

I don't know if Bale will act like a dingdong or not but if Levy doesn't want to sell this summer, I don't think he will. If he gets a ridiculous offer and Bale becomes toxic, then he might sell. I don't see either happening though.

I think this depends to a large extent on Ronaldo. I reckon they're going after Bale so hard because they're worrying Ronaldo won't stay. If he commits, they may cool off. We'll have to see I guess.

I agree with that. But Spursalot is talking about using a contract as a means of requiring a player to stay at a club.

Re: Gareth Bale

So any other suggestions on how we spend £85m apart from Lamela? Lets say Lamela takes care of £35m leaving us with £50m.

Even if Levy puts say £20m of it in the stadium kitty, that means we have another £30m which could get a genuinely top class player. What do we think - midfield playmaker? Unlikely to be the Pjanic chap from Rome if they've just sold us Lamela, and obviously Moutinho has moved...

Kaka & Coentrao + £85, is the deal I'm looking for ....... And I do like the idea of Bernard .
