Sociedad have a few very good players though. Zubimendi, Barrenetxea, Oyarzabal, Kubo, so I'm not sure I'd choose them.

I would be a bit brick to play AZ again though, having played them in the League Phase (1-0 from Richarlison's pen). Bit of a mixed team that day, very different to the one that played the other day: https://thfcdb.com/matches/2024-25/az-alkmaar-24-october-2024-home/lineup

Sociedad look like a typical Spanish team that usually goes far in this competition or even wins it. And with the final down the road in Bilbao they’ll be targeting it.

Looking at that I think I want AZ...that side of the draw looks softer...plus It'll put United v Sociedad on the other side.

Not much difference between the two teams on paper maybe - AZ dispatching Galatasary with ease is a concern. As an away fan I'd prefer we draw RS

I would have said AZ a few weeks ago, thought we beat them fairly easily a few months ago with our 2nd string, but that Galatassaray result has spooked me a bit..

I don't know if I'm missing the point of the convo, but UEFA want at least 8 players to have been trained in the same national association as the club and then of that 8 they want a minimum of 4 to have actually been trained by the club itself. It's not really anymore complicated than that.

UEFA are trying to encourage local development and discourage the buying of young players across borders. The idea is to reinforce the weaker leagues who for years have been raided for any half decent looking talent. So they want clubs to develop their own payers first and then after that players from their own league/nation next before they cross borders and buy Brazilian/Argentine/Afghani youth.

You're probably not missing anything. What you say is true. 17 is really the magic number in both England and UEFA setups as the maximum amount of "foreign" players you can have. Then we've ended up with different classifications for the rest between PL and UEFA.

Spurs just sent in 23 A-list names. They listed Whiteman and Austin as their "club" trained. They listed 4 of Spence, Davies, Madds, Solanke and Johnson as their "association" trained. That means they have 6 "locally" trained in the 8 slots provided. That is the way UEFA classify.

So say it was Spence that wasn't named, he just just gets put in as a non-categorised A-lister which is exactly the same as Romero, a foreign player, and Gray, a local U21 who hasn't been registered with our club for 2 seasons. To UEFA, they are all the same. They are just A-list. In that A-list you could have up to 17 other homegrowns, you could have 17 foreign players or you could even have 17 U21's who haven't been registered at your club for 2 years.

Finally, football can have a really hard and honest side to it. Just ask our 3rd club trained player at the club, Max Robson. Unless I'm missing something, I think I'm right in saying that he could have been named like Whiteman.

Anyway, back to important things.

EL draw is at midday today.

I hear that Spurs and Utd get one of AZ Alkmaar or Real Sociedad each. Is that right?

So it's Spain or Holland for away travelling fans.

It's all further up the page in this thread Mutley....I think the 'squad composition' posts have distracted you from the important stuff :)

Ah, that's right! I had completely forgot we played them in the league stage. They were quite good.

Sadly, i fear whoever we get if we don't have a Solanke or Richarlison. If we aren't going to be defensively strong, i'd want us to be easily able to outscore teams. Without that physicality that can enable the likes of Tel, Odebert, Son or even Kulusevski to get into very dangerous scoring positions, we might easily be stunted imo...

When is Solanke due back?
