Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place
Hey, Icelander, bit of an off topic question for you.
Are there any young up and coming potential new top class Icelandic players around? (Eidur class)
With Sig gone I would like to see Spurs sign another Icelandic player (if he's good enough of course).
Good question. We kind of hit our "golden generation" with players around Gylfi's age group. Guys like Kolbeinn Sigþórsson, who is leaving Ajax, most likely going to QPR - Aron Jóhannsson, who plays for AZ and decided to play for the U.S. in the World Cup - and Alfreð Finnbogason, who joined Real Sociedad this summer, amongst others.
I think the three most popular names would be Hörður Björgvin Magnússon at Juventus, Hjörtur Hermannsson at PSV and Albert Guðmundsson at Heerenveen.
Magnusson (21) is a centre back, but can also play as a left back. After playing for their youth team, he was loaned out to Spezia last year, but recently signed a new contract with Juventus and was then loaned out to Cesena, who are playing in Serie A next season. Look for him to break into our national team this year. Oh, and he also did this:

Hermannson (19) is also a centre back who plays for the PSV youth team. He's captained our youth national teams and played his first games in our top division at the age of 16, before joining PSV in 2012. He'd already been on trial with many clubs, including A.C. Milan, who reportedly would've signed him, if he'd been from Italy. Allegedly. He's tall, nearly 190 cm, so hopefully he'll turn out the be a good one, especially since our national team desperately lacks good centre halves.
Gudmundsson (17) is probably the best known of the bunch, since he shares a name with his great-grandfather who was a known footballer back in the day with Arsenal, Nancy and A.C. Milan. He was also Iceland's first professional football player. Gudmundsson is a no. 10 or a striker and plays for Heerenveen, hopefully he'll get some chances this season with their top team, not just the youth side, although he's still only 17 so there's no rush yet! Arsenal courted him pretty heavily, he was regularly on trial there and had a contract offer on the table before choosing Heerenveen. Before you get your hopes up though, he's a lifelong Gooner, along with his entire family, and has stated many times in local interviews that he's determined to play for them someday!
Anyways, that about sums it up. I don't think we have anybody in Eidur's class coming up anytime soon, or even Gylfi's for that matter. Eidur's talents were there for the world to see at a very early age, but these lads still have time to grow and go on to make a name for themselves.
