Europa League - Round of 32: Fiorentina (ITA)

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

The 2014/15 regulations are still the same and I haven't seen anything written about a change regarding the CL winner.
The 2014/15 regulations contain the entry criteria for the 2014/15 European competitions (including that the EL titleholder gains entry to the group stage of the EL - which as we know is not the case for the 2015/16 competitions).

But from The Telegraph:
"... if an English club wins the Champions League or Europa League and finishes outside the top four of the Premier League, there will be five English teams in the former competition the following season."
"... in the highly unlikely event that one English team wins the Champions League, another wins the Europa League, and both finish outside the top four ... the fourth-placed Premier League team would again miss out, as would clubs in similar positions in Spain and Germany, who also have four Champions League spots by right."

The actual UEFA announcement was very brief and uninformative.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Odd thing about Man U not qualifying for Europe at all - it didn't get a mention on MotD and has not been touched on generally.

Almost as though there's a back door being opened for them as we speak.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

UEFA Champions League place for the UEFA Europa League winners

The Executive Committee then discussed the 2015–18 cycle of the competitions and noted the proposals of the Club Competitions Committee (which met in London on the afternoon of 22 May), themselves based on intensive analysis by an internal working group.

In the UEFA Champions League, no major changes are envisaged for the new cycle because the competition is already an undeniable success. However, to increase e the prestige of the Europa League, the Executive Committee agreed that the competition winners should be awarded a place in at least the play-offs of the subsequent season’s Champions League. It also increased the maximum number of UEFA Champions League places to which a national association will be entitled from four to five, so that the UEFA Europa League winners will not replace a club that had qualified through its domestic league. This increase concerns only the top three national associations in UEFA’s rankings. Moreover, no association will be able to enter more than three teams for the UEFA Europa League, excluding any that may qualify through the UEFA fair play ranking system, as these places are not affected.

The UEFA Europa League winners will qualify for the UEFA Champions League from the start of the 2015-18 cycle, which means that the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League winners will qualify for the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League.

They don't really mention the CL winner.

I think the first bit covers it, keyword is entitled. I think the second is just one of two examples.

Arsenal's win yesterday means Hull will enter in the 3rd qualifying round, while Tottenham enter at the playoff stage.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

I'm old shcool, and there are a few 'blasts from the past' I wouldnt mind us drawing in the 4th Qual rd.
St Etienne
Hajduk Split
Red Star Belgrade, but maybe not Feyenoord though

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Some nasty ones in Pot 3 which could cause an upset. We have a mightily impressive co-efficient.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Some good names in there, like the look of some possible groups we could be matched up with.

HJK or Rosenborg in the play off would be nice, followed by:

Challenging Group: Spurs, Wolfsburg, Real Sociedad, Torino

Moderate Group: Spurs, Standard Liege, Lokomotiv Moscow, Partizan Belgrade

Easy (ish) group: Spurs, Hapoel Tel-Aviv, Rapid Vienna, Estoril

Top group would be fantastic in terms of prestige of teams although I don't know that we could get away with playing a mix of younger players and still qualify.

consistent appearances and runs over the last 7 or so years, it will help if/when we get in CL again

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Saw an article saying Spurs will ask him to change his attitude of the Europa League being an unattractive competition but surely he'll realise it's worth playing in just for a chance at getting a Champions League place?

I think much was made of it with Southampton, but the truth is, they had neither the squad depth to cope with it, or quality to win it, much easier PR to the fans to dismiss the competition than admit that.

Based on current EPL dynamics, it's probably sounder strategy for Spurs to settle for 6th/7th and go all out to win Europa as the CL entry vehicle.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

I would favour leaving at home the 11 who are starting on Sunday for each Europa League away match the Thursday beforehand. Not bringing them and having them on the bench, but leaving them in London. The long away trips to Eastern Europe crippled us last year.

I'm not sure that is true. Based on last season's standings we need to have a good season, a bit of luck and for two clubs that finished above us to have a wobble. I do not think that is beyond the realms of possibility.

Winning a cup is always more difficult to predict because it comes down to one off games and random events frequently decide one off games.

Agreed. We have the depth to be able to do that
