Eric Dier

You can tell everything about an organisation by how people leave it. Doing something like that to a servant of nearly a decade would be horrendous toxicity.

I think you can go down the route of saying "look you are not in the plans and won't be getting a PL place" and make it clear they are not in plans, I mean we have done that over the years and players miss out on places in PL or CL. Like you, I don't think it serves you well to be aggressive about it. Not hardly the standard to set for incoming players

It really wouldn’t, we have too many players, especially overseas players and he is perhaps the least suited of all to our new tactics.

If he won’t accept moving to another club then he is still free to go in a years’s time but doesn’t get in the way in training or get to adversely affect team performances on the pitch.

I get that some folks would like to see the back of him but the guy has played over 350 games for us, and some of the comments about what we need to do about him are poor imo.
You want him taking up a valuable overseas squad place because of the fact that he’s played 350 games for us previously, even though he is seriously unsuited to our new game plan and unlikely to even make the bench this season?

I am not saying we should keep him or not, my point was that some of the comments about GETTING RID of him ( after playing all those games) is over the top. I accept fans are fickle and there are some who go over the top in there comments about him.

Suppose it depends on how much Ange plans to utilise him. If he’s not going to be in the squad for the majority of games then it might not be the worst idea to not give him a squad number. I understand the sentimental side and not wanting to force him out but football is a very cutthroat business. I’ve said this before, someone close to Dier needs to pull him aside and try and make him see sense i.e. encourage him to find another club.

No I agree, footballs very cut throat. Players get told by clubs all the time they are not in the plan, many have been told they are going to clubs and given little say in the move.

He probably has been told.

If a suitable offer came in, i'm sure he'd leave. Otherwise he sits tight earns a fortune and signs a precontract with a foreign club in jan.

As you say, it's cut throat.

They have a say. They can always refuse to sign the contract. Sanchez just did it and refused to go to russia.

They do but in some cases from what I've heard from a few ex players in different podcasts moves can sometimes be heavily dictated by the selling club and there is very little choice in some cases

That's called constructive dismissal in any other industry, and would tend to end in a legal case. What if your boss called you tomorrow and said your desk, computer and parking space had been taken away, but you could still work for another year?

The club gave him the contract, so has to honour it, unless both parties agree to another arrangement. He's a good pro and was a vital part of our mid-to-late 10s golden era.

I agree about the good pro part but let’s not overstate his importance. He was never vital in part of the Poch teams.

28, 37, 36, 34 and 20 (=155) league appearances over those five seasons. Compare to say 32, 29, 33, 36 and 22 (=152) for Vertonghen.

Vertonghen would have started every game had he been fit and available for selection. Dier was replaced as first choice DM by Wanyama. If you were to rank players by importance in that team Dier would have been near the bottom of the list.
