Eric Dier

You guys think I'm trolling because I said I think Sanchez is the slightly better defender? I don't think either are up to snuff honestly. Now we've got some new faces hopefully we'll be able to let them both move on to new pastures.

agree i dont think either are worth keeping. but Sanchez is better with pace and can win aerial duals, something Dier statistically one of the worst at (there was a graph doing the rounds a while ago).

I love Eric Dier, Eric Dier loves me. He has been a perfect servant for our club. I've got nothing but love for the big man. I'm not sure he's quick enough to function in Ange's system, so I reckon he'll probably go. Lots of players before him in the pecking order now as well. Sanchez has got the speed to potentially function in Ange's system, but Dier is getting older and seems to have lost his feet somewhat. That's OK. You're awesome, Eric.

That comment was not about you.

said this before, i'd keep Sanchez ahead of Dier. Not saying Sanchez SHOULD be kept, but i'd put him in front of Dier without question.

Obviously not saying you did it mate, but bear in mind, the new Davo fan club includes some who absolutely coated the guy repeatedly (I mean generally, not specific to this forum).

My biggest issue with all these judgements is context. Davo is a good defender in the right system. Dier has his place in the right system/off the bench. Mourinho and Conte played a system which exposed all defensive weaknesses from the front backwards; they were simply not systems which suited our squad skill-sets.

FWIW that was Dier's first full game since what, last season? It memory serves, he's had 45 mins prior to yesterday? I'd say fatigue is why we gave up twice in the final minutes.

It's that time of year mate Tottenham Hottakes FC

I mean someone just confessed to not fancying the keeper on highlights.

Sanchez is as bad as Romero in the air
Dier is better than both
Sanchez suffers from letting the ball bounce way too much
The best defender we have in the air is Royal. He is rarely ever beaten and knows to time his jumps
Romero is poor
Sanchez is poor
Dier is average to poor
Davies is ok at full back and marginally worse at CB

Yes we can do better. Dier and Davies can go to other good clubs, we need better if we want to get back into CL. I hope we see another CB to challenge Romero. So far he is too impulsive and injury prone for us to have a stable defence in a high line.

Current manager is on record saying he sees Davies as a good left back for how he intends to play. It'll be him and Udogie for that position.

He's also pretty much said CB area is weak and we need a couple of additions (prior to VdV signing) that would suggest he doesn't have much faith in Dier.

I think there was an insight in regards to him wanting fast defenders to work in his system ... obviously Dier doesn't fit into that ... I think it's great that we have a coach that knows what he needs in regards to personnel

This prick better not be the new captain !!

A captain needs to be someone who is first choice and judging from our transfer activity and given Ange’s comments about being weak at CB, doesn’t look good for Dier retaining his place in the team. Not that you can look too much into pre-season but he’s not started any games when we’ve picked our first choice eleven from the start.

Ironic that he's ended up outlasting Harry Kane at the club. Sums up our approach, really.

Having said that, he's not a bad chap. Just an atrocious footballer who should have been sold a very, very long time ago.

Keeping players like him around because it's cheaper to keep him than replace him with actual quality.

Conversely, selling the only real quality we have because of the consequences of keeping players like Dier around - namely, winning nothing and treading water.
I agree with you about Dier but we don’t have to go down this Harry Kane/enic road every time. I’d be fine if we sold Dier too and got in a CB replacement first before a new striker. My only real worry is it’s a bit risky to chop up this much of the team but it had to happen.

I'd actually argue we need to do it immediately, and don't need a new striker at all.

Kane leaving will cost us 30 goals a season. Between Richarlison, Son as a striker, and Veliz, we might get maybe 15 goals back. Good enough for our ambitions of 8th-10th which is where we're unfortunately settling for now.

Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez single-handedly cost us 63 goals last year in the league alone. If we can cut that down to say 45 goals by shipping Dier to the Cambodian league or wherever his limited talents allow, bringing another CB with an actual brain and building a defense of Romero, VDV, new guy and Phillips, we'd come out ahead, imo.

Agree mostly. We conceded 53 goals in Poch’s first season, a similar total to that would be an improvement. Getting it down to 45 could be tough but hopefully playing on the front foot more and having better defenders should make a difference.
