Eric Dier

We miss his ability on the ball more than anything defensively when he's missing.

Dier is a lot more than decent, he's just one of those players who splits the fans who like thinking from those who like emotional outbursts. Much like Levy.
Dier isn't more than decent. He's the definition of mediocre. We could have a midfield of Xavi and Iniesta, the defence will still let us down due to their poor level.

The first paragraph was in response to a discussion onissing Bentancur.

But Dier is better on the ball than most on the emotional outburst side of the equation give.hum credit for.
I'm less bothered by how good on the ball he may be and more concerned about his general defensive qualities or lack thereof.

It’s you who seems to be emotionally attached to Dier. The rest of us just want a better CB and don’t hold anything against him. Pretty much just you and Baleforce left who rate Dier on this forum.

I’ve love to know the “thinking” behind most of Levy’s dreadful decision making since we moved to the new stadium.

I'm the opposite of emotional. I think purely logically. You seem to be the one emotionally attached to him despite his many failings.

This is just football, no need to get attached to players. The club will still be here many years after they've gone.

With Baleforce I think it’s just trolling as usual, he probably doesn’t really rate Dier that highly if you ask him honestly.

Scara just can’t/won’t ever admit he’s wrong about anything ever.

Peak Eric Dier was a pretty decent player in that hybrid holding midfield/third centre back role in Pochettino's team that pressed high and dominated the ball. Back then there were very, very few teams that dared to press us, with most instead wanting to sit deep and counter attack us ensuring they didn't give us opportunities to turn the ball over high up and create chances from the transition. It was when this period was over and teams started to press us that things started to go wrong, I think teams quickly realised that Dier wasn't at all press resistant as a player so he would be one of those they would target. The problem got worse when we had the likes of Sanchez playing as well, with Sanchez being perhaps even worse than Dier in this regard. Add the fact that our keeper was in the bottom quarter in the PL in terms of ability with his feet along with our midfield all being camped in our own third of the pitch and that created an absolute paradise for pressing teams, with them having multiple players that they could try to ensure the ball was worked towarsd and then target those with their press.

My thoughts are that you can carry a defensive player who isn't very good on the ball if his other attributes are top class and make up for that but unfortunately Dier's aren't. Too many times he makes the wrong decision defensively and on many occasions it looks to me as though he is purposely running away from danger so as not to risk making a mistake and it appearing to be his fault. Perhaps that is a confidence thing and could improve under a new manager but really I'd like to have braver players than that in the team.

The biggest problems arose with injuries and managers who resorted to an 'on the break' style of play which saw possession centered on defending. Add the weakness of out central midfield and, as you did say, not great partners, and it is pretty clear to see how his weaknesses got exposed (alongside many others I might add).

I have a huge issue when you say you think he on occasions was 'purposely running away from danger so as not to risk making a mistake and it appearing to be his fault' as you are flat-out suggesting he was a) hiding and b) a coward (to these eyes anyway). If that is NOT what you're suggesting, apologies in advance. If it IS what you're suggesting, I have to say I'm pretty shocked that someone who clearly knows the game would even get close to that viewpoint when it is so obviously not the case.

'not that long ago'?.... We've had 6 different managers in charge since then!

SIX? You're padding your stats there mate :D...

I think you can claim Mourinho, Nuno, and Conte safely.
I'm not about to give you Mason (twice) and Stellini!!!!!!

(if I've forgotten someone since Poch LMK...)

I'm sure you would, but I'm equally sure you wouldn't understand.

You’re absolutely right. I wouldn’t understand decisions that led to us finishing 8th, our worst league finish in over a decade and a situation where our best player is likely to leave the club. But carry on thinking he’s the best chairman in the world if it helps.

And what about his decisions that have led eveybody to think that 8th is a disaster and can now hold onto one of the best players in the world for the majority of his career?

So you don't accept that either Stellini or Mason (twice) have been in charge of the Spurs first team since Pochettino left?

And you also seem to be forgetting our current manager mate ;)

(formerly) 'Sir' Fred Goodwin also made a bunch of great decisions for the Royal Bank Of Scotland once upon a time, turned them into the biggest bank in the World in terms of the size of the balance sheet. Does that mean he should be CEO forever?

Good example.

If the club got to the point where it were essentially insolvent, I'd expect Levy to step down - as would most.

He should’ve gone well before then, if he had they may never have reached that point. A CEO (or anybody) doing good work once shouldn’t buy them forever more. Our club has made some bad decisions over the past 5 years or so. In saying that I do think some better decisions are now being made.

Better and less constrained often appear similar from the outside.
