Eric Dier

Defensive midfielder Eric Dier has started Tottenham's last three Premier League games, helping them claim seven points from a possible nine.

And Spurs boss Antonio Conte said: "He can become one of the best in the world for his position. He needs to keep working hard to continue to improve, to understand the movement of the defensive line."
The bolded part is key for me. I have said before that I thought Dier would benefit from playing centre back at a lower level to learn how to play the position as we couldn't afford for him to learn on the job with us. Through a mixture of having more cover playing in a three and some obvious good coaching from Conte, he is clearly getting better with his positioning. I still worry about him in possession when pressed, but maybe with some proper patterns of play to move the ball forward (something we havdn't had since Pochettino) those won't be easily exposed by the opposition.

I still think the criticism for Dier was warranted when we weren't playing well this season (but by no means solely his fault, or remotely even the biggest culprit in our back-line), but I say that in openness because he's been playing better under Conte like many of you have already mentioned, clearly more comfortable in the new system. At this rate, I still think we'll need a new CB to replace Davies/Sanchez, but they've both been playing better too. I still don't think they're at CL-challenging level, especially once Romero is back in the team. Again, by no means is this something we need for January, but definitely something to look at in the summer if we continue playing with three central defenders.

It is OK to like him mate :D

Playing centrally rather than on the left does so much for his impact in our buildup play.

He's fairly good with his left, but when forced onto his left seems to be where the misplaced passes show up when more ambitious. Playing mostly on his right takes him to a much higher level.

Long may it last.

Wrong decision. Wrong time. Got punished. Move on. I think he did and does.
Eric has some credit in the bank at the moment...so one dodgy out ball can be overlooked.

He's still on an upward curve, and let's not forget that he had the sit down meeting with Jose that concluded with him (them) deciding on solely focussing on life as a CH. There was learning to do from that moment and he's had to carry that learning thru 3 managers and 2 formations.

He's come on a bundle and I think that centre of a 3 position really suits him.

It was a poor mistake for sure but he has been one of our best players under Conte. As you say playing in the centre of the three suits him down to the ground. It allows him more chances to move into CM and for me that is where he is at his best with his long passes. Proving a lot of fans wrong this season. imo

As we press higher this was always going to happen with Dier. Everyone makes mistakes so I will let this one pass.

Maybe he has learnt better under Conte and now he just has to avoid any mistakes in the crucial 2nd half of the season where dropped points are increasingly magnified
