Eric Dier

Sissoko is not good enough for where we aspire to be. Having said that, he has been different class this season. As a footballer he has his limitations but he is self aware enough to know this unlike Dier who thinks he’s a better footballer than he is. Dier is an excellent utility player but I don’t see why some need to build him to some Pirlo esque, all conquering, ball playing CM when in reality he’s a destroyer, similar ironically to Parker who Sissoko and Wanyama get compared to.
I don't think you've been watching or understanding Dier's play - you pick.

He'll never be a Pirlo but he controls the game and the ball significantly better than the others. He has a far greater understanding of how the game is over the medium term in match, in the immediate setting and of how we play.

He's much more like Carrick than people give him credit for. Funnily enough, I used to have this same argument on here about why Carrick was a better option than his more highlight reel friendly alternatives.

I’ve been a season ticket holder for the past 4 years so I’ve seen plenty of him both live in person where you get a better understanding of a player and on tv when I’ve not been able to attend games.

He really isn’t that good on the ball scara. I’m not just talking about the mistakes he makes he big games, but I really don’t think anyone other than you and a select few others on this forum think he’s a top player in terms of passing and reading the game. I appreciate him for what he is which is a useful utility player and he never complains about being utilised in different positions but Winks is by far the best footballer amongst our CM’s.

Carrick was an underrated player but Dier isn’t close to him in terms of range of passing.

Dier seems to love playing for this club and he totally gets the rivalries we have with arsenal and Chelsea so I will always love him for that.

Look like others I like Eric Dier for what he brings to Spurs in terms of commitment and love for the club. He is also a reasonable player. He can add solidity when we are under cosh. But it is a stretch to say he has ever controlled a game. He has had good and bad games like everyone but he is not a player who "controls"games. Btw I watch spurs and him regularly too.

So understanding it is then. That's fine, not everyone gets it.

Winks is the best all round footballer we have playing CM I agree but winks has never yet played a pass like Dier did for allis first goal vs Chelsea away last season, or one like Dier did to set the balkpl rolling for Lamelas goal vs Brighton

Eric plays much better passes than people want to give him credit for

And his mistakes do happen but rarely cost us. Guess that’s the joys of playing high risk football. On the mistake front a lot mention his error vs pool last season which cost us. It was actually very similar to the one winks made towards the end of the Saudi Sportswashing Machine game last weekend which didn’t cost us because their brick

What I will add is you need a real mix in midfield and I think winks and Dier is that pairing for us now, although sissoko has been very good this season and doesn’t deserve dropping at all

Must be a hell of a lot of misunderstood people on this forum and in real life then, including Poch who signed Wanyama that plays in Dier’s position. Seems it is only you who rates him as a Carrick esque CM who controls games. Maybe if you actually attended some games you would see what he actually offers instead of your over inflated opinion of him.

We got 86 points in 2016/17 with Dembele and Wanyama in CM whereas Dier could only get a look in at CB or when Wanyama and Dembele were injured in CM.

Yet when all our defenders and Wanyama were fit, it was Dier and Dembele who Poch selected.

In which season are you referring to? Wanyama and Dembele were the first choice CM’s when we first signed Wanyama. He has declined since his numerous injuries which is unfortunate. We have never looked more solid than we did with those two in CM and we also scored more goals than in any other season. When you score more and concede less than any season in recent memory I’d say that’s a good thing but maybe I’m just misunderstanding the game.

He played 36 league games that season in the best defence we have had according to the stats... maybe we played him in defence as we changed tactics and he was our best option there.

The season after we added Davinson and Dier moved back to midfield and played 34 league games

That’s a lot of games if others were better than him...

Quite.

You're right, you almost certainly are.

Sanchez was a £40m signing to be play at CB. Tottenham Hotspur don’t drop that kind of coin on a backup CB. Chances are he was signed as either a long term replacement for Toby/Jan or to replace Dier as the third CB in the back three. Wanyama suffered numerous injuries the following season, hence the need to play Dier at CM but he barely got a look in at CM the previous season when Wanyama and Dembele bossed it.

You're right, you almost certainly are.

I’ll reiterate what I said previously, maybe if you attended games you would see what he offers rather than just going be what you see on tv. That’s why scouts and managers attend games in person so they can get a close up look at a player before signing him or so they can gain an understanding of how a team plays.

There’s nothing in Dier’s play that backs up your inflated opinion of him as this Beckenbauer esque, ball playing CM that you and Bedford believe he is.

We wouldn’t be bringing through the likes of an 18 year old Skipp and Winks from the academy to play in Dier’s position if the likes of Dier and Sissoko were top drawer.

And sorry which bit am I misunderstanding? Is scoring more and conceding less than the previous season which Wanyama and Dembele helped us achieve not the aim of football?

He played 34 games

That’s not barely getting a look in

That’s a player playing 90% or the league games regardless where he played

What would be the point of an academy if you don’t bring players through?

And i never said he was an amazing ball playing midfielder. Just that he is much better than most fans believe IMO and gets stuck for errors that actually don’t cost us.
