Emerson Royal

I still think this is over exagerated considering he is a full back. Firstly, I have seen him put in some very good and dangerous crosses (including one Moura headed in last season) - albeit not on a consistent basis. Secondly, he is a full back, and the majority of full backs do not have a good crossing rate save for specialists like TAA. He really isnt that bad considering what he is, a full back but is highlighted because he is being expected to preform more like a winger than a full back. It is way more damning on Conte constantly playing him there than it is on the player.....

It's a fair point. He's actually a good defender and we've looked more solid defensively when he's played. But he is that poor in the final third. I'm not expecting TAA, he's exceptional going forward for a full back, but I expect better from Royal than what we get. The crosses usually either never beat the first man or he'll take a safe option. Doherty is better in that area of the pitch and so are most other full backs.

We will just have to disagree mate. Doherty is a wingback, and has looked poor as a full back here. And most wing backs are more wingers than they are full backs. Put the majority of PL full backs in our RWB position and I bet you will end up thinking they are a lot poorer in the final third than you would when they are playing full back as you have a lot more of the ball as WB in an attacking area where you are expected to deliver whereas at full back you dont get the ball in that attacking area as much. And when you do the defence is occupied by the winger so you have more time and space and you are coming from a deeper position. As a wingback you dont have any such luxuries, its a completely different ball game and why it is wingers converted to that position who tend to be far more successful there.....

It is an indictment of our club that we continue to play a wingback who is so ordinary going forward. All of Conte's successful teams of the past played with productive attacking wingbacks

Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t remember any top-class right wing-backs moving clubs in the last 2 transfer windows. Anywhere.

Conte did not win the league at Chelsea with a top class wing back, just a converted winger who did not develop a nose bleed in the final third and who knew how to attack. He was not even a top winger he converted, but he did know how to attack.

That does not mean there were not better options available.

Maybe there were. Like who?
Your original comment that it was “an indictment of our club that we continue to play (Emerson)” made me assume (probably wrongly) you were criticising Levy for not stumping up the cash for a world class RWB. I just couldn’t think of one who was available even for big money. Even now I can’t but that’s probably just my lack of knowledge of what’s going on in other leagues. I guess it’s down to Paratici and our scouting network. Unless Spence makes rapid progress - if given the chance!

I absolutely hate digging the team and individual players out, but it’s ridiculous and unfair on the player himself that he keeps starting.

Especially when we have better and more suitable options on the bench. He just doesn’t suit how we play at all. We’d be no worse off defensively with Doc at RWB and he’s exponentially better going forward. Doherty didn’t do anything wrong last season other than get injured which is just bad luck.

You got me wrong. I was not expecting a world class player but I do think there are better wingbacks, attacking full backs or wingers that could be converted to a wingback than Emerson.

My thoughts as well, seems that in todays game some supporters have to a hate target and he is the one at the moment.
Royal can be super frustrating, but I tend to feel that Antonio Conte is a slightly better judge of whom to pick, and when to pick them, than at least 47% of the people on this forum.
