Emerson Royal

I like Royal more than most on here but Doherty continues like yesterday and the shirt has to be his. Defensively very good and took up much better offensive positions than Royal does. Should have scored early on too even if it wasn’t a simple chance.

He's just far more natural in that position than Royal. Times his runs better, in the right position more often....round peg in round hole

Yeah that's what i don't get about Conte.
He will see that in training and still prefers Royal. Makes me believe that he prioritizes defensive strength more tha attacking from the wings with us right now. Perhaps that's how you build a team, from the back.

I think that's probably part of it at the very least.

We should also be careful with thinking "he did well when he got the chance so he would have done well earlier". As you say Conte sees them in training, a part of it may have been that he's been short on fitness or other issues.

If we return to Emerson starting every game after his suspension, if Doherty keeps doing well for the next game I will be a bit puzzled though.

I actually think it’s a counter balance for perisic who really struggles defensively
We have seen a wonky set up before and it doesn’t hurt. The issue is that mediocrity of Emerson’s attacking really does hurt in the end

I think it’s absolutely that, for Sess too.

In recent games, the early avg position heat maps have looked more like a back 4, with Davies/Lenglet being quite wide.

Royal is very often in the right positions, arguably more often than Doherty, it's just that he doesn't have the necessary skills to actually do something useful with the ball in those positions. Doherty is much better in that regard.

I'm in 100% agreement. Royal makes fantastic runs and is great at finding space. He's just brick at using the ball once he's there. He's simply not an attacker or even a hybrid attacker that the WB position requires. Good player but at the wrong time for the wrong coach and system.

Have to say I think Royal has improved this season.

Red card against Arsenal I thought was very harsh. Even more so in the circumstances of an NLD and a game where the ref let quite a lot pass. Deeply frustrating at the time, but won't hold it against the lad.

Think he's been better at buildup play, playing through pressure. Uses the ball better in our third and the middle third.

Can see him take on players a bit more perhaps too, though difficult to compare to last season with my limited memory.

Still leaves a lot to be desired, particularly in the final third. But positive steps. At times he hasn't exactly been helped on the ball by having Sanchez directly next to him. At other times the absence of Kulusevski also makes his job harder.

I still want Doherty or Spence to at least be options, get some rotation at the very least in games, but also from the start. But I think there are positive signs.

I still think the path to being a quality wing back looks long and difficult to traverse for him. But he's showing positive signs, good reports of him pushing himself to develop. Conte, like most managers, will like and reward that. Can't ask for much more from him, but open question about the future.

He's not a wingback.
Training him up to try and play wingback is akin to training Tanganga or Chris Perry or Kaboul or Lenglet to be a wingback. Why?

He was an absolute disaster tonight.
Surely Doherty or even Spence can't be worse than this clogger.
Tonight's game summed him up in two moments , the diabolical control that led to their corner and goal and the moment when rather than take responsibility and play forward he gave a two feet square pass to Holberg , who immediately looked forward and passed forward to Richy for a give and go and then burst past the last defender and dinked up a great cross for Sons stunner. .
It's exactly what a good wing back should be doing but Royal can't.
He was shown up by our defensive midfielder.
Surely he can't be first choice any longer.

I'd argue another moment summed him up too, being in the Frankfurt box when an attack broke down and being back in our 6 yard box 8 seconds later to shutdown their break.

It was probably one of his worst games for us tonight, but Conte clearly trusts him, this was must win, he got the start.

Yep, Hojbjerg got into *THAT* right flank position once and put a ball right onto Son's plate for the volley.
Royal gets their 100 times and NEVER manages to find any of the 3 strikers.
The guy is a good defender, but truly awful in the final third.
Hard to imagine a worse outcome than his 386 attempted crosses and 382 failed connections; yes I made that up, but you get the point.

Conte loves Royal and he is not stupid so we have to accept that Conte prefers a more defensive right winger with the players we have.
i.e. he doesn't think we are good enough defensively

Dier was responsible for the goal, no question and I am not in any way absolving him. He knows. But he’s allowed a mistake, especially when it is clear that when Deccy is not playing, Romero does not fancy giving the ball to Royal as he knows the likely result is getting it back rather than Emerson looking to push on and fine (for example) Deccy. So Romero goes back the other way. Over and over. Again, Eric has to control that ball, it was poor, but it further accentuated (for me anyway) how unprogressive Emerson without Deccy is. Even with him to be fair.

Delivers next to noting going forward so he needs to be pretty much perfect at the other end to justify his selection, which he hasn’t been recently. A red card in the NLD and a poor control which contributed to Frankfurt’s second goal last night. The annoying thing is, he will be straight back in the team once his suspension is over regardless of how well whoever fills in for him plays. It’s a real blind spot for Conte that he needs to rectify quickly.

I’m not sure he will. It made sense to play him last night because Doherty has to play Saturday and next Wednesday. If Doherty plays as well as he did Saturday in those two games, I’m demanding Conte takes a paternity test if he puts Royal back in.
