Cristian Romero

I don't know why anyone is surprised by that clip of his mistake. He does this all the time, trying to draw players in to press him so he can pass around them. Usually it works out, but he's been making a lot of high-profile mistakes lately regarding this. Now, I suspect more players will try to press him if he has the ball.

The reason why Romero polarises opinion is because he can put in top class performances, he has shown that. But he will back this up by either doing something stupid during the same game, or poor/erratic displays in the following game. He is capable of top class performances but he is not a top class defender. Those are the ones that do it week in, week out and can be relied on as being solid whereas for Romero you could create a pretty long video reel of all the goals he has cost us. Noone can honestly say they know what type of performance Romero is going to put in on a week to week basis, the only thing you can guarantee is that he is going to make some pointless fouls throughout the game at one point or another.

Could totally seem him at Athletic Madrid, his antics would fit right in there.....

Worth watching the other Argentina players. Complete lack of options. Made me wonder whether it was high temperature / humidity where they were playing?

Not defending him though. He shouldn't be making mistakes like that.

It is true, a few midfielders momentarily switch off in that exact moment that Romero gets closed down. He still has the keeper and the other CB as options though, although we all know Romero tries to beat the press by going forwards. Huge brainfart though for such a high-profile player.

He has some elite characteristics as a player
His passing is the best of any CB
But he he also has flaws as we have seen
He is far from crap
He doesn’t appear to want to remain here
He needs his agent to find a club who will pay us an acceptable fee. I think clubs will look at his age and fitness history and make some judgements and that’s gonna be a dent on his expectations

I recall some excellent passing that created some incredible chances....for Bournemouth. It always looks bad when it goes wrong but to give away such nailed on chances out of situations where there's so little to gain, it's not ideal.

Tbh despite his flaws he would probably be a beast for atletico, Simeone will adore Romero's antics. And he would actually get protection from in front so would probably look incredible again.

Whilst I don't see him in training I still want to see a couple of trial shifts in DM, I cannot imagine the game drifting him by like it does with Biss and Bents on their iffy days...

Yep, it's a shame we've never had a full quota of fit centre halves so Ange could afford to have Romero in holding midfield. So many of us have pondered about him in that position over these last 3-4 years.

He and never been mentioned by any manager as player there
He kinda did at Atalanta due to how they played with a 3
I think it’s the perfect fit for him

Apparently most of the individual defensive mistakes made are because of what he 'tells the them to do'...
It’s rarely the players making basic errors
Fatigue will also play a part and I think Romero may be suffering from that because of the volume of games he has watched on television

Respectfully, there is a fantastic balance in the fan opinion between Ange's tactics and the players individual execution. There doesn't have to be a single root cause on these things but there's no smoke without fire in both areas.

Rather than player's poor performances, I'm more worried about the talented ones that may get loose in the saddle because of where the club finds themselves. Managing the Romero situation is one thing. If another 4 or 5 of our best want out, that's not good.

I worry how no matter who the manager is top drawer players forget how to make basic passes and it’s the tactics …
Romero may what out. I think he does
I say, good luck to him. Find a club that will pay the £75m which is about the value I think he ranks himself at
He has quality skills as we know
I personally don’t see a club being willing to gamble that
And it’s a gamble because he will have been here 4 years I think and managed maybe 10 consecutive appearances where you think wow…
He has lots of great games when fit but that brain fart that costs a goal is there time after time and it’s exactly why teams won’t pay the big money IMO
He will also want £250k plus

As you know I am a supporter of dialectic thinking.
