Cristian Romero

I’m not sure he is on decline but he isn’t suited to possession football.
He's 32 and his game has been highly reliant on pace and sharpness so it's inevitable he is on the decline, his peak years have gone. Not just this season but last season, he almost never beats his man now. Agree that being a possession based team highlights his flaws...

Some players are freaks and play really well into their 30s.
Those crazy foreign types that don't drink.
The likes of Ibrahimovich, Suarez, Thiago Silva, Pepe, Chiellini, Puyol, Vardy etc.

Son might be like that, he's never partied, he just lies down in his pressurised trousers and gets berated by his father.

Reminder, Romero is banned from the Qarabag game due to some old ban, I think from the AC Milan game where he stupidly hacked down Leao

Defending a corner, Romero did the same thing that cost us a goal earlier in the season.
He chased our clearance out, galloping 25 yards forwards to pressure the opposition defender, who simply switched it forwards and wide, with Romero waaaaaaay out of position.

To me he was one of the players that actually responded well to us letting in the first goal. He kept playing his game, he kept playing our game.

If others had more of his composure and belief we wouldn't have lost control of the game like that.

With the armband and his experience perhaps he could have done more to lead and not just by example. Pointy shouty stuff. At least it looks good to some. But I mostly think of taking responsibility in situations like this as a collective responsibility.

How did he respond in your view?
What worries me with him is I’ve never heard speak a word of English. He never does any interviews here and I always think a captain needs a common language with his team
That’s nit picking I know but actually key for any leader is communication and I see none of it from any of the “leaders”

Maybe he's mentally checked out...sadly, he's seen what we've all seen in recent years and whilst he's been shocking, he probably also believes no matter what he does our system will continually keep the likes of him exposed.
Put it this way, would he be so bad in Arsenal's set-up?

We might be forced to sell, regardless of whether Madrid are in for him or not, sadly...

I'm just finding interesting that VDV was equally bad yesterday but there's been little no comment. does VDV also have his mind elsewhere?

MVDV is the junior one in the partnership tbf, and he hasn't had the glaring brainfarts that Romero has had for a while now.
But the worry is the heavy rot will set in with him too as it has most of the defence...

Someone else said it yesterday, individually they are good, I'm not convinced they are a great pairing in Angeball.

VDV has not been classed as the best defender in the world, he hasn’t won a world cup, he doesn’t even get into his national teams first 11 and is also younger than Romero. Also everyone can see VDV is not very good at defending 1 on 1’s or crosses. Romero gets criticism because he is so overrated on here. He is not even in the top 5 cb’s in the prem but some will tell you he is world class.

He wouldn't get into their team.

Kept playing with purpose and bravery on the ball. Played to the system. Took responsibility on the ball.

Our press imo failed, that was the "fault" of players ahead of him. But he kept being aggressive and trying to be a front foot defender.

Several times he was slowing things down (as imo is part of our approach), he was obviously looking for movement, looking for options to open up. That didn't come. Others imo were shirking responsibility to get on the ball and so something useful, he didn't.
