Coronavirus

My wife and I got our second jabs on Tuesday. AstraZeneca. Was told to expect a mild fever or chills but no real issues for us, a fairly fit and healthy couple in our early 60s. Felt a couple of light headed spells yesterday aft while working over the vegetable garden but that passed quickly. Slept like a log last night - had morning wood! - and fully functional at work today.

Here in Upper Canada, the vaccine availability is rapidly growing and the vaxx clinics are very busy. Did a photo assignment last week where 1,200 doses were briskly dispensed in a morning session. Pretty routine sight now. Re-opening announcements skedded for next week.

annual vaccination drive for Flu means we were well established. Good ol' NHS.

Will miss it when it's gone even though i have private cover.

Why do you have private cover if you think the NHS is good?

I have private cover but I think the NHS is brick, the doctors and nurses have always been great when I have been there. But the admin side, oh my days it is was then awful.

Just saw a headline on BBC/Sky News about June 21st might not happen and I stopped reading !!
Yet more doom and gloomers rolled out including Ferguson whose models have got everything so so wrong since the start but they still air his views

But Oz has been covid free for ages, at least you've been able to do whatever you want apart from going on holiday.

Back into 7 day lockdown in Melbourne from today. COVID-free is a flawed idea that has only lasted for a few months at a time sadly, hence our need to move on with the vaccines.

I just don't get the idea of COVID-Free
It's never going to happen, from what I've read is that within 3 years COVID will be like a bad bout of the flu
We're never going to be cold or flu free so why even try

2nd jab appointment was 6.35pm at a clinic 10 miles from where I live
I got there at 6.30pm and was back in my car driving home at 6.40pm
Like a well oiled machine !!!

That's good, at my local you have to stay for 15 minutes in case of any side effects.

I just had a ache in my arm for a couple of days after the 1st one and for around a day on the 2nd one - one lady had a reaction in the room after and got taken away by paramedics.

Once over 60s and vulnerable people have been vaccinated things should have been lifted and the same goes for seasonal variants.

A single-dose Covid vaccine made by Janssen has been approved for use in the UK by the medicines regulator.

The vaccine, which was 85% effective in stopping severe illness from Covid-19 in trials, has met expected safety standards.

Twenty million doses have been ordered for the UK, and will arrive later this year.

It will be the fourth vaccine to be used in the UK to protect against Covid-19.

More than 38 million people have now received a first dose of a vaccine in the UK - nearly three-quarters of the adult population.

The vaccine is likely to be used to give care home residents a booster jab ahead of winter because it can be easily stored and transported at fridge temperatures.

The UK's vaccine committee - the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) - will produce advice on exactly who should receive the Belgian-made vaccine in due course.

The single-dose jab has already been authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nadhim Zahawi, vaccine deployment minister, said: "The Janssen vaccine will be another weapon in our arsenal to beat this pandemic.

"We are doing everything we can to vaccinate all adults as quickly as possible and I encourage everybody to come forward for a jab as soon as they are eligible."

The vaccine uses the same technology as the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and is likely to be more suitable for older adults than younger people who are being offered an alternative to AZ in the UK if under the age of 40.

The US, South Africa and the European Union briefly paused the rollout of the vaccine in April - also known as Johnson & Johnson - after reports of rare blood clots in very small numbers of people after their jab.

The vaccine is currently being tested as part of a UK study to find out whether a third dose could protect against new variants.

Its like they can’t just make a positive statement always has to be followed up with a well....

21st June is on but the next pandemic will be far worse

It’s estimated that around 25% of the British population have now had covid.

https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/news/over-25-of-the-uk-likely-to-have-had-covid-19-already/

Around 150,000 have died as a direct result of having contracted the disease - and that is despite three generally very well-observed lockdowns.

At the beginning of the pandemic Ferguson’s modelling estimated that around 500,000 would die without lockdowns.

So, if anything, he underestimated the likely death toll if we had let the virus move unhindered through the population.

He wasn’t far off being spot on though.

You can't just times it by 4 though. A large proportion of the 25% who had it were the old and vulnerable, as hospitals and care homes were the main vectors for it.

The big groups who didn't really get it were working age middle class white collar workers who had escape pods to hide in, but who will have had mild cases of it if they had had exposure

Yeah you’d need sophisticated computer modelling and expertise in epidemics to make a better estimate.

I think a lot of the time they do it to feed their ego's in the public eye too
Things are going well, we've 10 days of lovely sunshine coming up, people are happy
Ah lets keep saying we might have to push back lockdown 4 to the end of July
I think some of them get a massive kick out of it
