What is a kettle lead? is it just for the kettle?

As far as this is my fault - I think if you got your facts straight about the pros and cons of expensive vs inexpensive HDMI leads - we wouldnt be in this mess and involved in an abhorrent thread. I am ashamed to have my name linked to this thread.

Just as many of your ex's are ashamed to have their names linked to you, and have gone to extensive lengths to hide their past, including being renames, relocated and having facial reconstruction surgery. ;-p

The Kettle-lead thing, is the detachable mains leads that goes into electrical devices. They are colloquially often refereed to as curly kettle leads, which seemed a good reference point for my distaste at companies trying to tell you that buying one for Five Grand is a good investment!!!
 
So back onto the OP... What is the point in the Apple TV? As far as I can see, it is a box that offers you the same features that practically every TV and Bluray player on the market offers you for free as a side feature no?

Pretty much getting that way now yes. When it first came out, it pre-dated SmartTV's, but now the gap has/is closed.

Its a good way of geting your iTunes content onto your lounge TV basically. The GUI is very fast and very good, and you have access to your iTunes Library for Photos (if you use iPhoto), Music, Movies and TV. So, if you are using an iPad and/or iPhone, your content is likely to be in iTunes anyway so the ATV is just a nice user friendly way of connecting your TV to your Ipad/Iphone and iTunes.

Its easy to use, I have one in the main lounge and one in the smaller lounge which the Mrs uses a lot - as its a consistent GUI she comfortable using it. There is a PS3 available, but the ATV is just a much better experience in my opinion.

Anything that isn't in iTunes, i convert using Handbrake, so its nice and easy.
 
In a nutshell:

If you are an Apple household great, if not then no point look at a smart TV or a console (XBOX or PS3)
 
If I connect my mac to my tv - will i basically be able to use my TV as my laptop screen? so I can watch movies and porn etc?

Fairplay, I've got an Xbox for the media side of things which works well enough. The only thing that tinkles me off with it is that they have Zune instead of Spotify, which I refuse to use.

Worth a quick watch? Iv'e connected the Wife's Macbook to the old TV in the past - I've just never done it in recent years as I dont like tinkling around with cables!

Do those things have HDMI or is that another thing Apple skrimp on? You can slave a laptop to a TV through HDMI (remember you'll probably have to go into the options and tell it to stop using the onboard speakers once you've connected, then restart whichever application you're watching/using for the new settings to take effect).

Nope, you need an adaptor to connect a MacBook to anything other than a mini-displayport. I like Apple stuff but they don't half fleece you when it comes to cables!

Oh yeah, and the mini-displayport to HDMI adaptor doesn't send sound down the HDMI cable either, which is a pain. I think the only Mac with a built in HDMI socket at the moment is the Mac Mini.

I just brought an adaptor that connects to a mac which is then connected to a HDMI cable which is then connected ot the TV. 10 quid from ebay. YOU TELLING ME IT DOESNT HAVE SOUND? SO WHAT THE fudge AM I SUPPOSED TO BE LISTENING TO?

Okay, that might not quite be right. It was definitely true a couple of years ago but according to Apple MacBooks from mid-2010 onwards will send the audio over the adaptor to the HDMI cable. When I had a MacBook Pro it was a 2009 model so it didn't send the audio. So if it's a pretty new MacBook you should be okay.

Sorry if I made you brick yourself there :D

er my macbook is a 2008 model. It aint even a pro.
