Apple TV

arrrrrgghhhhhhhhhh

do i get a male to male? fudgein gay HDMIs.

Also are ya gonna bloody help me with my apple issue?

Apple Tv to TV will need male to male, yes.

The cables Southstand suggest look a good shout. Nice and cheap, but not so brittle they will snap! :) Generally I just look for build quality (ie will it snap/will the ends come off etc), and then the required length. Dont get ripped into paying ?ú40 upwards though - utter flimflam. most people dont understand that digital works differently to conventional analogue, and peoples thinking hasn't altered with time - thereby creating a huge 'Snake Oil' market for expensive HDMIs!!!!

Here you go; try these guys if you fancy getting fleeced! :-D http://www.russandrews.com/product....&customer_id=PAA2312041612451EMVVFYXISPUSWJUB

And better still - the THREE THOUSAND POUND CURLY KETTLE LEAD!!!; http://www.russandrews.com/product....&customer_id=PAA2312041612451EMVVFYXISPUSWJUB

You just want my vote for the end of year awards dont ya?

I am passing on Russ Andrews - 3k for a fudgein skipping rope? what the fudge.

I am using Southies recommendations.

Final question - to use the HDMI will I also need to have attached the scart lead? or is the HDMI enough?

I have now achieved my objective through this thread.

The quality of cables does make a difference even in the digital domain. If the digital signal is not being sent via an optical connection then it is being sent electrically (converted to analogue then converted back to digital at the other end) However it is a law of diminishing returns, the higher end the cable the less improvement per ?ú. Also you match the cable to your system, you wouldn't run a ?ú2k HDMI cable on a sky box and alba TV! Diversely you wouldn't run an Amazon ?ú10 cable on a Lexicon ?ú15k AV system. Its all relative.

I always apply the 10% guide, spend 10% of the cost of the system on cables, so ?ú250 blu ray player = ?ú25 HDMI etc..

Oh and HDMI sends picture and audio so no need for the scart just ensure you have set the components up correctly to send and receive on HDMI

and there is Boonie to put a spanner in my fudgein plans.

arrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh

What do you mean set the components up? you mean TV and set top box and mac etc?

HDMI - no scart. Plug it in, job done. Lock this thread! ;)

Disagree. The D/A conversion isn't taking place across the HDMI cable, so as long as 'the wet piece of string' will transfer a 1 or a 0 from one end to the other, then the quality is the same!

A digital system doesnt convert to analogue to send across a digital cable!

Sorry mate but from experience the quality is not the same across the board when it comes to cabling. And I realise that there is not a D/A conversion as such across the cable I was trying to explain thing in words the OP could follow as his experience in AV set ups seems limited (no offence).

The 1s and 0s argument is a good one as yes this is how digital signals are sent and received however HDMI connected devices convert the colour space of the video signal this is then encoded and up-scaled twice en route to the display, when a lower quality cable is in the mix you find the impedance control of the cable is inferior to the better quality products, this is what creates loss in the signal quality resulting in magnified loss when the colour space conversions and up-scaling take place inside the equipment. As I said the better the gear the more you notice the differences.

Yes, just ensure that HDMI is selected as an output if it is offered on the system menu. A lot of products auto detect when an HDMI cable is plugged in so there may be no need to check, PS3 for example will need to be told to output HDMI if you have used analogue connections previously.

Fight Fight Fight.

Boonie vs Monkey Boy over here.

Boonie - I get ya. Will check it out today. cant wait.

I still think you've been sold to! However, lets agree on the first point - this whole bloody mess and confusion is utterly the fault of DHSF! ;-)

LOL! I worked in the AV and CI industry for quite some time and have carried out side by side comparisons with HDMI as well as other digital cables as I too was once a non believer. I admit the difference is not staggering at the lower end but when you have better equipment it is really noticeable. Mains conditioning also makes a difference, believe it or not.

Did you work for Russ Andrews? ;)

haha, seriously though, I just dont get it! Im a 1s and 0s person, and I have read enough FUD on the subject which really makes me believe there is no difference. However, as you say, if you have seen a difference, then you cant get better proof than that so Im crtainly not knocking your eyes or your track record! I'm still not spending ?ú5k on a 2meter kettle lead though!!... ;)

If anyone else fancies getting stuck into this one, its probably the longest running most done to death argument in AV forums. More so even than 'Is Bassong Suspended'.
This is where I'm at: - http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20056502-1/why-all-hdmi-cables-are-the-same/
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57321956-221/why-all-hdmi-cables-are-the-same-part-2/

but there are approximately 2 million counter arguments!
