I always find it strange when people say things like this. It's like saying a Ferrari would be a **** car without its wheels.
absolutely spot on!
whilst we're at it, why don't we point out that zidane would be a worser player without his first touch. the "taking away a player's pace" debate is just pointless. and is usually thought up by people who don't understand how players develop.
if you suddenly gave a 25 yr old teddy sheringham bale's pace and power, he would improve obviously. but he wouldn't be able to utilise it anywhere near as effectively as bale. the way that bale uses his pace and power is absolutely phenomenal. and the ability to utilise those traits so effectively are built up over a long period of time, through hard work. ever since bale was a young kid he would have been fast, and would have tailored his game around that trait. hence he would have a lot of subconscious knowledge regarding how to use that pace. if bale was never quick as a kid, his game would have adapted totally differently. and who knows, maybe he could have developed into the welsh zidane.
the simple fact is; its bloody difficult to use bale's pace and power as well as he does. and thats why he gets paid the money he does. there are countless proffessional footballers that can run the 100m in under 11 seconds, but you don't even know they are that fast because they don't know how to use their pace like gareth bale.
