2015/16 Europa League - Round of 16: Borussia Dortmund

I just want to see Spurs playing European football of some sort every season, obviously we all want to see us in the CL, but if it has to be it's little brother, than so be it.
I dont need to quote Bill Nicholson, we all know what he said about European football and Spurs

Not fussed about trying to find what channel the mighty spurs are on on a Thursday night. It'll do us good to have a break from European football and give us a reality check which we have needed for so long.

I want us to finish 6th, but I'm not exactly going to be disappointed if we miss out on the EL and get to play Saturdays like the majority of the league.

I think we've had a reality check for the last two seasons tbh. That money we wasted has set us back years.

I want a manager who doesn't take it at all seriously until the knock stages and then at that stage surveys where we are with everything else and makes a decision on whether to change tact and start taking it seriously from there.

Exactly Finney. It's not either or, it is about managing it properly, having a plan and sticking to it. If those squad players that i mentioned above cannot see us through the group, then so be it. And it will tell us a great deal about those players.

What's the reality check?

That we've fallen out of the 2nd tier of English football (5th-7th) into the 3rd tier (8th-17th)?

It wouldn't do us any good - if we're not in the EL places, we're no better than the likes of West Ham and Saudi Sportswashing Machine and it will show in our transfer activity and commercial performance.

I think if anyone needs a reality check its supporters who want to put all our eggs in the 'must finish 4th' basket when even the weakest of the teams we'd have to finish above spend roughly 70m more than us a year on transfers/wages.

We're not in the top 20 anymore:(. Last night's result by Juventus added enough to the Italian coefficient to lift Napoli above us into 20th place. Napoli would've overtaken us anyway if they avoid defeat to Dnipro tonight.

Next season we will lose the coefficient points we earned from our Champions League season so we will fall behind teams that gained fewer points that year (AC Milan, Sevilla, Olympiakos). It looks unlikely to me that we could get back in the top 20 next year.

Well if that is true we sure as hell will not do ourselves any favours if we do not make the EL as some fans seem to want.

Seriously?
Whats the point in having a good coefficient if we never qualify for the Champions League?
UEFA are changing the seeding for the Groups anyway. We'll be 3rd seeds if we ever get there regardless.

I would feel much happier about playing in the long drawn out death which is the Europa League if we treated it with as much contempt as EUFA do for the clubs that qualify for it. It's just a chance for the clubs that drop out of the Champions League an opportunity to win something. I would like us to play squad and development players in all the qualifying games and the team managed by the coach of those teams. Anyone due to play at the weekend should stay in London and concentrate on the weekend fixture and work with our first team coaches.

I am not so sure Bill Nicholson would have been that impressed by what the Europa League turned out to be.

right, the EL is looking more and more like the Intertoto, there's european football and then there's european football

Only for Sky 4 hype poisoned England. EL is a very big deal over the rest of Europe.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Schar had rejected us because of how poorly we perform in Europe

It is better for Spurs to qualify. If it is that much of an hindrance, Poch should let his assistant manager use the reserve/u-21 squad to play the matches. It seems too much of a whine fest and lack of ability to handle pressure for Poch to say he prefers not qualifying for EL. The higher we finish the better for Spurs.

We are too good for it apparently  we have one season in the CL and some fans think we are now too good for the EL.

They say playing on a Thursday/Sunday is harder then playing on a Wednesday/ Saturday, and do not forget the LOADS of extra games we have to play compered to the CL, and all those extra miles we have to travel. ;)

It's not really that we are to good for it. But we have seen in the past what for an impact it can have on our league form. Personally I would take the EL serious this year, simply because we are not going to get top-four anyway. But there is no denying that it has costed us in the past. In particular that first year under AVB I am a hundred % sure we would have made top four if we didn't take the EL so serious.

They say playing on a Thursday/Sunday is harder then playing on a Wednesday/ Saturday,

It is not of course, but Wednesday-Saturday is only one of four possibilities, it doesn't exactly happen all the time, in the EL it's always Thursday-Sunday. So a clear disadvantage if we are in the EL.

and do not forget the LOADS of extra games we have to play compered to the CL,

Well, this extra knock-out round against Fiorentina came pretty inconvenient this year don't you think? Meanwhile CL-contender Chelsea had a whole week to rest for the final against us.

and all those extra miles we have to travel. ;)

Which is actually true.
