So I’ve spent the day processing everything, the performance, Ange’s actions, the discourse and a few points from me:
- Ange ear-cupping antics last night were completely and utterly inexcusable. Thin skinned as has been said, and he is showing himself to be not cut out for this level. And what’s worse, for him, is that he is single-handedly torpedoing any chance of another top level job through his actions. I had sympathy for him through the injury crisis, but now he is toxic. He is absolutely gaslighting everyone with his ‘explanation’, if you can call it that and for me that’s unforgivable. Be accountable and own your actions.
- It comes to why he hasn’t been sacked. I believe it’s genuinely down to optics and the muddled, PR-driven decision making of Levy. He was burnt by the discourse around Mourinho being sacked and clearly doesn’t want to repeat that experience again by firing Ange before they’re out of Europe.
- This is madness. There is such a small chance we go all the way with the current malaise we find ourselves in and allowing this wound to fester is akin to pouring petrol on an already highly combustible and polarised fanbase.
- I think a key priority for the next manager and a question I’d be asking at interview stage is what is your role to play in uniting this fractured fanbase? Ange said again today “I feel like people want me to say something that will somehow change the mood of the fans. I’ve just never done that or felt like that is my role.’ You can argue whether that should be a key facet of any manager, but I believe it is absolutely foundational to success.”
- Ultimately this is a sorry, sorry mess and I want it to be over. Now. If Ange stays, things will absolutely get more and more toxic, potentially doing irreparable harm to a - largely - potential-rich squad, which will then lead to ANOTHER costly rebuild that this time we can’t afford.
- I really wish this could’ve worked, but it’s time to say goodbye to Ange, for the good of the club in the mid-long term, not for the chasing of what is frankly a pipe dream of a European trophy.
Sad times all round.
