Zeki Fryers

It's about time he fudged off anyway. Seriously, retire and spend a bit of time with the grand kids Fergie it's not like he needs the money!

I dont think anyone can criticise Fergie, some of the serious uptight people on this forum would be going mental if this had happened to us. Daniel Levy would have the lawyers in over it.

I remember criticising gutterboy for his alternative theory... ill accept there is a good chance he was right on this one, but he was bound to hit eventually as he comes up with these theories all the time. Also a slight chance that it was a genuine homesick case and we were re-contacted, but Standard L never had to know what spurs and the player planned.

Of course we would. But it didn't, did it? And that's the whole point. At long last we have turned the tables on them and mugged them off. Finally.

I don't get why it is always YOU who seems to want to voice the opposite of what everyone else on here is thinking/saying. No harm in an opinion of course, but it sometimes seems as if you are trying to start an argument where there actually is none to be had.

Spurs fans are laughing together tonight. Makes a nice change.

He is English ? Thought he was from Czech or Hungary or something. Just hope he is worth fighting with other clubs for. He has only played a total of 9 matches in his entire career.

From wiki: During the 2010–11 season, Fryers suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for most of the season

Maybe our fitness and medical folks bought him as a lab rat or somthing :)

Ferguson is manipulating the situation so as not to look like a fool. The brilliant thing is we have got one over on him - oh deep joy.
Before Fergie Tottenham were equally as big as Man United and about as successful, 20 years+ of him and we have slipped behind. Let's hope this is a pointer to the future. Probably the first time we have got one over on him since Paul Gascoigne chose us over him in '88.

Well, I expressed my opinion that it was unfair on clubs that develop the players if the compensation rules could be breached so easily.

So I would like to thank Fergie for making me so much better about this.

Why is this unfair? Man Utd wanted 6m for a player they weren't offering a suitable contract to. Spurs offered half that figure. He can join Standard for free, so he did.

If anything the tribunal system is unfair. Clubs can make stupid valuations for players they don't even want. If Man Utd had offered a decent contract and showed they wanted to keep him then maybe he would have stayed. As it is, though, he was out of contract. So Man Utd have lost out through their own greed and being unreasonable.

The second time now, after Pogba.

However, these experiences won't change their policy of poaching kids from Belgium, Italy or Holland, or Brazil and manipulating the work permit system where necessary. Look at their youth team, there are several kids there that have been poached because they can sign a stronger contract in England at a younger age compared to in Europe. How many times have Man Utd been investigated for poaching players? Loads and loads. Le Havre over Pogba, Fiorentina over Fornasier and Gollini, Parma over Rossi. As well as other youth players from Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project, Chelsea....

The difference between these and Fryers is that Spurs tried to agree a fee and couldn't because Man Utd wanted to rip them off. Now Whiskey Face is tinkled that someone got one over on them - despite admitting Spurs did nothing wrong.

I think he would, actually I would have thought he's done the exact same thing before making the Fryers deal. To figure out if we were breaking any rules or not. That's part of what lawyers do. If Manu want to talk to same lawyers to see if we have broken any rules then they have every right to of course, I'd expect them to.

Actually, if they did do that I would have expected Manu and Ferguson to shut up about the case until they had figured out if they had a legal leg to stand on. I would think that there's a very decent chance they've already done that, know they have no legal approach to this case so instead they go running to the press.

But to go to the press like a whinging little bitch, that's quite different than checking your options and checking if any regulations have been trespassed upon. To talk about "fair", in what is a very competitive transfer market where clubs always try to get one over other clubs sounds disingenuous. Was it "fair" when they nicked Pique from Barcelona? Of course not, yet they did it. Why? Because he was a good, talented young player and they weren't breaking any rules. To do that themselves then go moaning to the press about the Fryers thing is hypocritical.

Of course Ferguson probably knows it's hypocritical, but he also knows that he won't be pushed about that because if some journalist tries to do that he'll just block them and their media outlet from his press conferences. With the financial implications that has for the journalist and media outlet the knows they will bob their little heads and ask the questions he wants them to ask.

And yes I would be tinkled off if it was the other way around, I probably would moan and whinge about it on here. There's a difference between "some dude on a forum" and "the guy running a football club" and there's an even bigger difference between what I say as a fan and what someone who is running a club says publicly.

I agree with jts that the system seems unfair. Why should a foreign club be able to pick up a player on a free while other clubs in the same country must pay a fee? Is it the same in Germany? Would Dortmund have to pay a tribunal fee for Holtby while we could pick him up on a free? Doesn't sound fair, but as long as those are the rules we should play by them.

I was under the impression that the £6m fee wasn't set by United, but by an independent tribunal who set that as the "development fee" or whatever it's called.

No.

United were holding out for 6M. The tribunal never got called in, but it was possible they may have been backed up to that figure, or near it. Hence our reluctance to deal. £6m for an untried youth is ridiculous

I agree.

Was there a reason a tribunal wasn't called in?

Because it is intended to stop poaching of players within the same league. Same way teams from abroad can negotiate a deal with a player earlier - by a few days - than domestic clubs, if his contract is expiring.

I agree.

Because the two clubs were so far apart in their valuation. As far as I know...

Either way, United screwed themselves over.

I agree.

Am I right in thinking that, if the tribunal is called in, both clubs have to abide by its decision - meaning that the buying club has to commit to the purchase regardless of the eventual fee?

If so, and especially given Utd's undue influence within the FA, it would hardly be surprising if Spurs didn't trust the tribunal to come up with a sensible price and therefore declined the tribunal option.

I think after a tribunal is set the buying club can decide on if they want to sign the player or not.

Would be ridiculous if not I would think.

Often the tribunals occur after the player signs. Bostock signed with us and the tribunal later set the compensation. I assume once a player is out of contract he can sign with who he chooses. So Fryers could have signed with us last summer and then United would have called in the tribunal to set the compensation. At least I think this is how it used to be, although they keep changing it.

I love the fact we seemed to stuck two-fingers to Fergie on this (though I worry about he implications for our game against them in two weeks but anyway....)

Can someone detail exactly what Fergie may have done to Levy for Levy to seemingly take 'revenge' like this? I'm assuming it's more than just the Berbative and Carrick situations, as we got top dollar for both...

Very good points - especially the bolded bit=D>
