because it will pretty much **** up everything that was successful last season and make us play a totally different system.

Eriksen imo is nowhere near as effective in the middle than when he's playing on the left imo. On the left he's devastating (as shown last season) and can easily get 15 goals (in all comps) ghosting in and being totally unmarked time and time again. He has to stay in that position and our money should be spent on a player that is effective in the middle.

Sig can do a job and could easily get 10 premier league goals playing in the 10 role.

Your comments about his effectiveness on the left are right but how you can see he would be less effective in the middle I don't know. He hardly played there for us and has spent most of his career there

He could carry on playing on the left and do a great attacking job but he always leaves the left back woefully exposed (pretty much like England in the World Cup)

It could work if we have a defensive midfielder covering that side which may be the case but I'm in the camp that two pacey scoring wide men alongside erisken would be better for us and this guy could easily be one (although I'd prefer griezman)

I don't agree that he did that.

is what we should be looking at if we're looking to play 4-2-3-1

a passing/creative type is needed if the plan is 4-3-3.

That's actually a good point. I'm very curious to see what Poch does with Eriksen. Like you I think if he stays on the left he will be one great source of the goals we badly need from the attackers behind the lone front man

Let's say 15 from Eriksen on the left, 15 from Lamela on the right, 15-20 from the lone forward then that's around 50 goals right there

Maybe but again i don't trust him to be consistent in that role.

The AMC in this league needs to be fast and able to dribble with the ball imo.

Yes yes yes about the AMC, that's exactly what we need and he has to have the ability to play incisive forward passes that split open defences imo. Maybe it will be difficult for us to find a player with all 3 attributes, but for me if he only has two like the incisive passing and being able to dribble then that would be enough for me

Poch does like a wonky (wide forward on the right - Rodriguez/Lamela, playmaker on the left - Lallana/Eriksen).

But I do think Eriksen will move into the centre as he learns to influence games more (the same move Modric, vdV, Sneijder and many others made during their careers).

I'd still like Kono. £15m is a bargain for someone of that calibre and it gives us the option of having some pace and penetration down the left (cf our other options of Eriksen, Chadli and Siggy). Importantly though he is inverted, so shouldn't ruin our shape too much like trying to incorporate Lennon does.

I don't think that the AMC necessarily needs to have either attribute. A player with good awareness, movement, touch and vision would be equally as effective. As an example Ozil doesn't seem particularly fast and his game isn't about dribbling.

While I absolutely agree that Ericksen was far more effective drifting in from the left last season, I think he also has the attributes required to eventually successfully transition to a central role. He just has to get a little more clever (and busy) with his movement and braver in demanding the ball.

I also agree with BedfordSpurs that Ericksen leaves our left side exposed defensively. Tracking back doesn't seem at all natural to him, the fact that he prefers to drift inside when we are in or out of possession makes it quite easy for the fullback to get on the overlap and not have to worry about him. Playing somebody who is a true left sided forward might make us more solid defensively, even in the fact that they might be more likely to hug the touchline when we're out of possession, making it harder for the opposing fullback to press on.

Ozil is not very quick though, neither is Fabregas or Mata imo. All good dribblers, but that's a slightly different story. Bergkamp was pretty much a number 10, at least at times, and was far from rapid.

Bergkamp was a withdrawn forward/support striker. A "number 10" is a playmaker (midfielder in nature/without striker instincts)

Support strikers:
Baggio, Zola, Bergkamp etc

"Number 10's":
Ozil, Riquelme, Mata

I can't think of one example of a number 10 that has made it in the league without possessing either pace or good dribbling.

How about some of the other names i listed? Veron even listed Mata as a number 10 in that post you answered KD.

I was talking about the position (AMC) because that's where the conversation started, not about the (potentially) differences in roles. Bergkamp played in the position between the lone striker and the central midfielders.

VdV? He was technically very good and had skill, but wouldnt say his actual dribbling skills was all that...

Good call. I don't remember him ever beating a player with the ball at his feet and he certainly wasn't quick. Mata is another good example - neither really a dribbler or a quick player.

You could probably also count Paul Scholes who played as the advanced midfielder for Man Utd on many occasions (although that was more in the 4-4-2 days - but still same sort of role.

Carzola at Arsenal?... Doesn't seem like a player who relies on pace or dribbling?

Lampard at Chelsea? Used to play as the most attacking midfielder - very little pace, rarely even attempted a dribble but hugely successful for many years. Prior to that there was Gus Poyet - again not pacy or a dribbler, just a creative footballer with good touch, who was excellent at getting into the right areas and then taking the right option.

What about Zidane for Real Madrid? Isco now? Diego for Athletico last season? Riquelme a few years ago?

Moutinho is another one - extremely successful in that role but doesn't rely on pace or dribbling.

Michu at Swansea in his first season (before injury). No pace and not a dribbler. Shall I stop now?!? :D

I would say the biggest attributes required to play as the central attacking midfielder are touch, vision, positional sense, movement, bravery and confidence. pace/dribbling ability are merely a bonus. For example Aaron Lennon has both pace and dribbling ability but I think he would make an awful attacking central midfielder precisely because he lacks several of those other attributes.

The names you listed are good dribblers and are reasonably fast (all faster than Eriksen that's for sure). VDV is a good example though..

you said Bergkamp was pretty much a number 10.

A number 10 and a support striker is the same position on the field but different role/responsibility
The same way an out and out winger and an inside forward may start in the same position on the field but have a different role.
The same way Sandro and Gerrard start in the same positions but have different roles. and so on and so on

Baggio and Ozil will both start in the same position between midfield and lone striker but have completely different roles and dictate the game in totally different ways.
