World Cup 2022 Qualifiers

Canada roll on with a 2-0 win in El Salvador last night. Captain Atiba Hutchinson scores one of the craziest goals ever seen. Heads a cross off the post as he's falling, then the ball rebounds off the foot of ES defender Eriq Zavaleta, hits the back of Hutchinson's head as he's sprawled on the grass and slowly loops over the keeper's head before spinning over the line. Best view is the field level angle at the end of this clip.

Canada-Jamaica in front of 30,000 this aft in Toronto. Kickoff in about four hours. Always enjoyable to welcome a rival from tropical climes and see that an inch or two of fresh snow has fallen matchday morning. Cold and windy, too - -5C, wind chill of -13C. Very cool runnings.

A win for Canada (still missing Alphonso Davies) and they clinch top spot in Concacaf's Octagonal qualifying tournament. They have virtually clinched qualification for Qatar. Top three get in, fourth goes into a playoff with Oceania (New Zealand). Canada's in first on 25 pts, 3pts up on USA and Mexico. Costa Rica in fourth on 19 pts could conceivably pull level with Canada. But Canada's goal differential of +13 is the difference maker with Costa Rica sitting at +2. Panama's fifth on 18 pts.

After earning an important 0-0 draw at The Azteca, the Yanks host Panama in Orlando and need a win to clinch qualification. A draw would mean they could finish no worse than fourth but still have to win another round to qualify. A loss would leave them having to win their final game in Costa Rica where they have never won. If Canada beats or ties Jamaica, they're through and their last game is in Panama, where they will likely sit their top players and run out subs and youngsters, giving Panama a better chance of winning. So a win today is crucial for the Yanks. They missed the last World Cup and there is immense pressure to make this one, given that they co-host in 2026.

Mexico should qualify with two easy games - away to last place Honduras, then home to El Salvador.
 
So. 4-0 Canada. Cold weather was everything forecast. Jamaican experimental lineup no match. First place sewn up. Still to play at now eliminated Panama. Only motivation is to bump up FIFA ranking for better seeding in Qatar. Bloody colonists, eh?

5-1 Yanks over Panama. Could be caught on points by Costa Rica, where they play on Tuesday (and have never won at), but +10 goal differential is a big cushion.

Mexico won 2-1 at El Salvador. Final game at home to Honduras, should be a doddle. Still, a loss of more than a couple of goals, and suddenly Costa Rica have a chance if they pip the States by a few. Most likely is that CR will play New Zealand for one of the final WC berths.
 
Great to see Canada qualify, seen most of their campaign for 2022 and it's been a fun watch, already had my mother in law over in Calgary message me her delight at the team reaching the "World Cup play-offs".

Just catching up on results and saw Salah missed again in a repeat of the AFCON final... Did the lasers play a big part in their misses? bricky fan behaviour if so. Also saw Nigeria got knocked out and starting trashing the place!
