Might be working a WC qualifier on Jan. 30. USA at Canada. Should be nice and frosty outdoors in Hamilton, Ontario that night. Cold snowy weather certainly worked against Mexico last month out west in Edmonton, Alberta.

We're about one hour away from kickoff. Crucial World Cup qualifying game - Canada at Honduras.

When Honduras really, really want to take you somewhere horrible, they play in the wretched environs of San Pedro Sula. We're there tonight.

Canada hasn't won in Honduras since 1985, the year they swept their two matches and qualified for the '86 World Cup in Mexico, their only appearance in the big event. Now, Canada, with 16 points from 8 games, tops CONCACAF qualifying, one point ahead of the US - who they play on Sunday(I'm there) - and two up on Mexico and Panama. Honduras, on 8 points, is the doormat of the Ocho, the 8-nation final qualifying round. Top three are automatic entrants, fourth gets to beat New Zealand for the last chance entry.

There'll be all manner of schithousery from the hosts. Dirty play, faking injury, dreadful pitch and horrible dressing room conditions. Fans chucking baggies of urine and feces, severed chicken heads. What's not to like? Tune in. Turn on.

Our young men have not played in vain

A crushing 2-0 win for Her Majesty's Timbered Dominion over Schithouse Central. At their barn - hey, the pitch was a compete pasture. Up to their usual nasty tricks, waved on approvingly by a Jamaican ref on peyote and - probably - a family taken hostage. Should have been two straight red cards in the first half against Honduras. One nasty challenge put Canada's version of Harry Skipp out of the game. To make the evening more enjoyable, Costa Rica held on for a 1-0 win over fourf place Panama to give unbeaten Canada a five point gap over fourth.

Two more wins - against the US on Sunday (paid to be there) and in El Salvador on Tuesday (ayyyii! Remordimientos, amigos), combined with Panama failing to get a win either at home to Jamaica (Let's Go!) or in Mexico (Vamanos!) and tiny, plucky Canada qualifies for the World Cup in Godless, Pitiless Qatar with three games to spare. The first round will be on Bayern Munich. Hell, the first 11 rounds will be on the Bavarian giants who won't have to send superstar FB Alphonso Davies to any more Canada games until the WC. He's absent from this round with a covid-related heart issue.

Some goal scored by Premier League wannabe, Lille's Jonathan David. In the highlights below, it starts at 4:20. The pass to create the goal is from young Liam Fraser with Toronto FC of MLS - a 45-yard laser guided dart that David chests down beautifully and delicately chips the keeper. Seriously good save for Canada at 3:54-ish. Game saver at 1-0 and under pressure.

Anyway, check it out. Not as exciting as The Continental Soccer League coming to Springfield. But you'll see all your favourite Concacaf soccer stars - like Ariaga, Ariaga II, Bariaga, Aruglia, and Pizzoza!

One of those great days that will live long in the memory. A huge 'Shut The Fcuk Up' to the braying donkeys who tout the US soccer team.

Your humble, doughty correspondent was there and even pulls some nice facetime in the early going here:


One funny story. The photo work room was immediately adjacent to the US dressing room, only separated on part of the wall by a metal roll-up door that allows the dressing room size to be enlarged or divided. What we got to overhear was hilarious. Before the game, a loud voice from one of the players said they were 'wolves, hungry wolves. Let's hunt like a pack. Tear 'em up!"

Half time, the tone is much angrier. Shrieking from the same voice about 'WTF are we doing out there?' More angry questions then summing up by demanding they 'go out there and leaving it all on the pitch'. Well, they left it out there all right. Tears and dirty diapers and harsh recriminations. By the way, the US goalie who's at fault for that vital first goal has signed for Arsenal.

Friggin' freezin' for the final hour as the wind came up and temps dropped to around -14C. But no one was complaining after a great 2-0 victory. Beat El Salvador - there - and Her Majesty's Timbered Dominion is back in the World Cup.
