His lack of creativity/inability to release the ball stifles our entire attacking play.

I rate him defensively, but he's not good enough to be the primary/sole DM (cf Sandro and Capoue)

It doesn't, Superpav has got the wrong end of the stick. We won't be paying him any more, Emirates Marketing Project just stop making a contribution towards his wages this summer.

The problem with that is that there is no one at the base who can play the early ball
 
I think Capoue and Dembele would give us much better balance. Capoue can distribute and Dembele can run with it when there's space. Both can get forward and cover for each other as well.

trouble is both are quite injury prone.

Been quite widely reported that this just isn't true.

Transfermarkt has him on for us until 2015 (http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/youns-kaboul/profil/spieler_27114.html?from=direktErgebnis) and I think it was Stobart reporting that he had a year left too.

Agreed, that remains the problem.

Perhaps it could work with a back 4 with plenty of ball playing skills. Something like Ekotto, Verts, Vlad (and Walker)? But currently, not so sure. Ghod I miss Ekotto's ability on the ball by the way. I even miss the "lol, playmaking left back what a joke" comments. I wonder if Danny Rose has managed to change anyone on that one...

I wonder whether Holtby could develop into that player. He's a keen runner but he would need to be a bit more disciplined and stop chasing lost causes. He seems better suited to it than Eriksen anyway.

I think in time Holtby could. Eriksen is a long way off defensively, but also massively at his best in the final third when attacking so using him deeper seems like a waste anyway.

I'm torn between having a solid midfield pairing (Sandro and Dembele) or have more of a deep lying playmaker or a "regista".

A Strootman or a Javi Martinez-esque player would be very successful in the premier league in my mind. But not sure who we can get. A job for our scouts.

Or if we can get an Axel Witsel, or Montolivio type player to dictate play from deeper. I am hopeful we just let Lamela blossom and he does. The front four would need to be played consistently to let them build a chemistry.

I could live with that except from Cole ;) Would also prefer Bony over Lukaku, I think a faster forward would suite us better.
 
Had a think on this and realistically, if we are looking to play a 433 or 4231 we can afford to lose two from Paulinho, Holtby and Siggy, one out of Sandro and Capoue and one out of Soldado and Ade. Given what we already know, I think we'd be better of losing Paulinho, Siggy and Ade, but I can't be sure who I'd rather lose out of Capoue and Sandro as I rate them both.

I'm going to design my team in the same mould using a similar setup to how Brendan Rodgers had at Swansea in their first EPL season. They played with Britton and Allen sitting deep with Siggy playing as the more advanced of the three in midfield. Both of those two had good short range passing skills and got through a lot of work, despite not being the most defensively gifted. They played a big part in helping Swansea keep the ball as well as they did.

Then again 7.5M for Lallana is quite hilarious too. If we weren't being so fanciful then I'd say realistically we will likely retain the services of Vertonghen IF FDB gets the job. Lloris will go whatever, but the money we get from his sale will be enough to buy a decent keeper and still have change to get other players. Lallana is also a pipe dream with the only reason he could join us being if Poch takes the job here.

Is Micah Richards still playing? I remember him from about 2007.

Never really rated him myself - he wasn't tall enough to be a CB and carried too much bulk to be a FB.
