You buy some of the best youngsters on the planet and hope a couple come good.

The fact that even after agreeing a £100m deal to sell Kane we then took 12 months to merely settle on Solanke epitomises the gross incompetence of our transfer planning over the past decade.

We're not replacing kane, not a ready made one.
If there is such a thing out there he's not coming to Tottenham.
Just like we couldn't replace or hang on to Modric, bale, son and dembele (although that's for different reasons), hell we've not even properly replaced walker.
Those are unrealistic for us and the sooner the fan base realise it the better.
We have to take a different approach.

I think most accept that Kane is an irreplacable generational talent.
However with that £100m fee we surely could've at least identified someone like Ekitike who has the potential to become an elite forward that summer rather than dithering for 12 months only to settle on a mid-table player who we know can do a decent job but ain’t going to be anything more than a squad player if we’re truly aiming to become a club which challenges for the very top honours.
Or perhaps we could’ve signed someone like Semenyo who might’ve been able to fill the void left by the imminent departure of Sonny, rather than taking a punt on a couple of youngsters who’ll need a couple of seasons of regular football before we’re even able to determine whether they are of the standard to be starters at a club which wants to be in Top 4.
Then there’s that lacklustre midfield of ours which might’ve been much less turgid with an Anderson or Wharton there, instead of continuing to hope that Bentancur can return to being the player he was before Matty Cash wrecked his career or Bissouma would finally become the new Dembele… thankfully Gray and Bergvall look like great prospects but they’d surely develop better alongside elite established players than expecting them to learn the ropes whilst simultaneously having to carry a struggling team.
I guess that Pochettino fella was on to something with his comments about a painful rebuild being necessary and ENIC’s decision to instead try and extract every last drop out the squad until they’re completely worn out has proved that they know far less about constructing a world class team than they do about property development.
Yes, I think maybe some of the frustration re. Kane is that when he left it took a while for the club to act. It was almost as if they'd been caught with their pants down(?). His departure was always on the cards and his contract was running down, and so they would/should have had plans afoot for quite some time. I don't quite recall all the details, at least not with clarity. Behind closed doors, was there some division in the ranks with some saying yay and others saying nay? How much did Ange want Kane? How much did Kane want Ange? Is there anything they could have said or done or presented differently that would have seen him still here today? What would it have took?

I would be looking at ekitike and was it alimouche the lad at Monaco.
However I think we need to be more resilient to the narrative. Sign those two and it would be all about how they're not PL ready, not physically up to, toughest league in world and all that bollox.
So we end up with Richie and solanke. Both fine players, but not necessarily what we need.
Similar with the manager situation after Frank, I mean really Tim sherwood or redknapp is just ridiculous.
There was nothing wrong with tudor as an idea but we allowed a negative narrative form in the press, partially as far as I'm concerned because he wasn't English. What's the highest an English manager has ever finished in the PL? Fourth?
As a club and a fan base we really need to learn to shut out the noise.

We replaced him philosophically. I'm sure that was one of the big pulls of Ange - he created a team that scored goals from multiple positions, rather than relying on a talisman.
And to be fair, he did it well, especially early on.
I think not replacing Son before the steep decline was more damaging
We always had a class player in our squad though. A hoddle, gazza, klinnsmann, ginola, berba, bale, kane...
We used to be capable of getting world class players. We have none now.
You left out Modric. My numero uno. Still can’t believe he played for us.

And look were it got us, kane, bale, klinsmann, ginola won zip with us.
Berba a LC and Gazza an f a cup is poor return for players of that calibre.
Not the players fault of course, there's loads of various circumstances around why we didn't win more with them, I just don't think it's the way forward for us.

Hoddle and Kane were generational talents through our youth system. Moore might be on that list in the future.
Bale (and Modric) were not world class when e-signed them.
Same with Berba, and Son - very good, but developer with us.
Gray, Bergvall, Moore, Vuskovic all had a reasonable chance of being in a future version of that list.
Klinsmann is the only we signed that was world class - and we didn't exactly sign him; he chose us and Sugar was in the right place at the right time.
OK and so? We always had a star in our team. A class player or more. We don't at the moment. It's why we are in the position we are in.

Given Richy was indeed more experienced and exposed than Kane was at the time we signed him, it was evident that he did not have the capability to reach that level. This isn't a failing on Richy's behalf, it's a failing of our scouting and analysis, if we seriously thought Richy of all people could somehow compensate for the loss of Kane. It's actually madness.

The word "always" and revisionist thinking are doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
We've only ever signed ONE (maybe two - I'd count Lineker) world class players.
The players you've mentioned were not world class when we signed them and, Kane and Hoddle aside, were only world class for two/three years with us. (Edit - there is a third; a CB from the 90s. Erghh. All three - through our youth system)
Go back and look through the squads from the early 90s onwards!
There are plenty of periods without any world class players in our team.
There are also plenty of years with good potential - that is the cycle we're in now, with 4/5 players that could become world class, or very close to it.

Like I say, replacing Kane is impossible.
But most of the others, we hit the profile and the metrics, but the players didn’t do their bit.

Now it's been a couple of years, it's quite interesting to look back at the window when Kane left and what sort of happened afterwards.
OUTS: Kane, Winks, Sanchez, Dier, Moura, Ndombele, Lloris - 121m Euro
INS: Johnson, Maddison, VDV, Porro, Kulu, Dragu, Vic, Veliz, Phillips - 272m Euro
With the loan to buy conversions and the big spend that summer, it's sort of hard to see where the Kane money went exactly. What is clear though is that only Vic, VDV and Porro have become 1st team stalwarts. We perhaps would have been in a different place had we had full access to Madds and Kulu as well. Personally, I don't think we "wasted" the Kane money but even Solanke who came a year later hasn't filled his shoes even to the 60-70% level.
There is also another factor in play here and that is tactics. Ange didn't replace Kane but he got as many, if not more, goals out of the players after Kane left. We stopped playing with the "luxury player" tactically as we had no choice. We had 10 workaholic outfield players who had to play with that intensity and defend from the top. Arguably, Kane would have been better under Frank than Ange. Solanke just became the foil for Johnson and Sonny to get the goals in my opinion.
The question still remains though. Who replaces Kane? As we saw with Kyle Walker, the RB chasm took 5 years to fill and some woud argue we never have replaced him.
