Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

As i said before, i'm not Ange out, nor am I thinking he's the second coming of Jesus. I feel i have to preface this each post as our fans are quite divided. but last night was on Ange. Another game where we just weren't smart, and i think it's intentional and instructed from him.

His constant ethos on attacking the other team. We were 2-1 up and under the cosh for last 15mins. How many fouls did we win? How many times did we kill the game. drop down with an injury, break the momentum of Roma?

Such a silly game to throw away. Time and time again, and a lot of times at 1-0 in the first half, Roma attacked, we won the back back, and instead of just slowing things down, holding possession, we tried to break fast or have Forster move the ball out super quick, just to fail to beat the press and have the ball come back again and again.

If we're a bit smarter we would close games out, but this method of constant attack, when reading the game it's the wrong thing, cost us the win last night and that's on Ange. just, incredible how good we are yet how dumb we play sometimes. It's ok when you're Celtic in the Scottish league. there are times in PL/Europe where pragmatism or smarts are required and i get he's wedded to his principles but throwing away games is foolish.

I think he sees the dark arts as being beneath him which is great in theory but in the real world or the football world, you have to win ugly and cynically sometimes.

But that's my point, you're comparing to a time where for 90 mins that's all we did. I'm saying it's not binary, we can play how we played yesterday, but for the last 10mins, yes a bit of Conte/Jose defending and pragmatism was needed. We also saw us win several games under both of them under that method. Now again, i dont want that style of play. but SOMETIMES, it needs to happen.

i'm not saying it has to happen ALL GAME. i'm saying if you're 2-1 up and the opposition are literally camping in and around your goal area, be more pragmatic, slow the game, waste time, feign an injury ffs. All of it, to see out the win. Dont do it for 90mins, do it for 10.

Ange wants us to be the great entertainers which i get, but he also wants to win. Sometimes you have to win ugly. Inter Milan beat Arsenal 1-0 a few weeks back. At 1-0 up, took off Taremi, a striker, brought on Dimarco, a defender. Saw the game out, won 1-0.

Ange being wedded to his principles at the cost of us winning games is a problem. It's idiocy.
I partly agree.

My point is that when doing that, regardless of for how long, we ended up losing games in the last 10 minutes. Had we done that yesterday we may still have dropped points.

My point is a pragmatic one imo. Which approach is more likely to work? And I don't think there is one right answer. Dropping points/wins late on hasn't really been an issue this season at least. Ange must be doing something fairly right. To be fair we haven't had a lot of close wins to see out (particularly in the league) , but we did see out close wins against Ferenchevaros, Alkmaar, and City (Cup game). Under Ange, with him being "idiotically wedded to his principles".

If this is something that ends up costing us more regularly over time I probably would agree that something needs to change.

Don’t agree with that
I think he work day the term art means a thing of beauty for a start
What he would say is your good enough you don’t need to cheat

We don’t time waste or feign injury like most teams do. I don’t like to see it but when everyone else does it all you’re doing is impeding your own chances by not doing it. We are most certainly not good enough to not have to resort to those tactics. Even peak Barcelona had horrible characters like Dani Alves and playactors like Busquets

Don’t disagree
But that’s Ange call

Bit of a head scratcher that comment. Then again I don’t believe a single thing a manager says in a press conference. And this is more evidence of that.

Earlier in the season he said almost the exact opposite. He snapped at a reporter saying he doesn’t want to play entertaining football for the sake of it. He wants to win.

Pretty sure he wants to win. Just wants to do it with entertaining football.

I actually think that comment in his interview deflects from his comment about having to select two 16-year-olds on the bench.

I was expecting the toxic press to come up with "Ange sends strong message to Levy that his squad isn't strong enough before the January window opens".

An article that would open with "Ange Postecoglu is becoming increasingly frustrated with the club after he was promised......."

I think we all know the rest of the narrative :)

I think he has got bored of the narratives so says anything for a wind up

I fudging love his attitude, I love his lack of brickhousing, I love what he wants to do.

My head says he’s nuts, my heart loves everything about him. And, I have to be honest, last two games I was at were Villa and West Ham, and I came out of the ground thoroughly entertained.
Maybe we should switch to this as our walk-in music.

IMO we haven’t looked solid since the Crystal Palace game last season. You need to be able to win in a variety of ways like Arsenal and Liverpool do. Not so much City. Arsenal can win ugly as we’ve seen against us and they can blow teams away. I think Ange is a bit too idealistic personally. Under Poch we blew teams away but could also be stingy at the back and win 1-0. I don’t know if Ange has that in his locker consistently. When we win it’s typically a blowout.
We definitely have to be able to win games we lead by a single goal. Not a big sample size on that yet, but the cup win against City I think was quite good in that regard.

But it's also true that when we get the first goal we're most of the time an absolute pain to play against and will often create chances to increase our lead. That's a very good thing of course, but for sure when we fail to do that we heve to be able to still get the win most of the time.

We are regularly exposed, we always look like we a deer in headlights. And I know he is all about attacking and entertaining, but like others have said I don't know if the luck we need will last the majority of the season and or win us a cup. Having said that, I do think Ben and Drag and even Fraser (who I was super scared about) have done well. But its still madness even when we have our preferred line up
