Vincent Janssen

If Janssen was our only other major signing this summer, would we be happy?

No. We would have filled 2 of the 3 major gaps in our squad which I thought we had last season.

The third is more quality in the positions behind the CF. Last season Alli, Lamela and Eriksen were head and shoulders above other options which we had in those positions and we need more competition/cover for them. Its plausible that Son might improve (he's closest at the moment) or that Njie might step up once he's settled (did nothing so far at Spurs before his injury though) or that Pritchard might make the grade, but based on last season we need more depth there. Chadli has had his chance and not good enough for say 5th / 6th choice in the 3 positions if you ask me

Agreed. Not to mention Mason, who's more natural role is one of those spots rather than central midfield. No shortage of personnel then. With N'jie and Pritchard as more or less unknown quantities and Son hopefully settled, if anything, you might say we need to shift one or two, rather than buy more. Chadli and Mason for example could depart.

I do agree though, a Payet type, would be ideal. Someone older to put their foot on the ball and add experience. Without Dembele, our midfield and attack becomes extremely young. I don't know who the player might be, but personally would like an experienced quality option. But we are not desperate for numbers by any means.

Truth is, we don't know that much about Janssen. Doubt if anyone on here has watched him play a full game? YouTube shows he has some skill, is he worth double that of say of Lucas Alario who we were also linked with today?

How do we know we can get Alario for half what Janssen will cost. The whole world knows about how much money is floating around PL clubs after the new tv deal and are demanding a share of it if a PL club comes in for one of their players. South American clubs are smart at demanding top dollar for their players.

The 17 mill pounds AZ want for Janssen is not even a lot considering he is a striker and has just had a very good season. Of course he may be a one season wonder in a poor league but unfortunately we are operating at a level where we can't afford to pay any more in terms of transfer fee and wages. He fits the bill and I'm not sure we can find cheaper in south America or anywhere else

According to that linked Standard article Alario has a £11m release clause. Probably lower wage demands too. But Janssen looks more established. All transfers are a risk. We'll trust in those that spend hours checking out these young talents.

I would say that £17 million is a pretty fair price for Janssen in today's market. If that is the price it will take to secure him then I think we should get it done.

I believe this player to be a hybrid of Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He'll probably turn out to be a combo of Robin Van Percie and Robert Kilroy-Silk.

I would not know because I have not seen a full game of Lucas Alario
