VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Don’t need to worry about your south American teams cheating so it makes it easier

Since South America teams accepted the European defensive approach, the European teams have accepted the South American gamemanship. Now, even England players are play-acting without shame !

Their joining the club

And the defensive approach actually was a South American thing... Uraguay won 2 world cups like that

How do you know?
There were no obvious VAR referrals but the VARs would still be reviewing the game in their cosy incident room.
Deciding a correct call has been made is as much a VAR function as the other way around.

Needs to be liked more than once

Obviously this

its obvious they're just letting some fouls go now. they've realised that it just isnt working in the manner they had hoped/envisioned. imo var will probably die out for a few years until a much better way of utilising it has been thought up.

to answer your question, it should have been used today to call a foul when lovren was grappled in the box during the corner, but wasnt. if you had watched the game via any non-english commentary, you would realise that the majority of neutrals think that it was a clear foul.

ill emphasise again, football is a game full of cheating. you cant consistently intorduce something like var without fundamentally changing how the game is played. theres pretty much a foul in the build up for every goal in football, and like we saw, there are so many opportunities to give penalties throughout a game. the impact that var makes is far too extreme/sudden - something like this needs to be introduced bit by bit, otherwise it just wont be accepted.

it seems there were only a couple of uses of var in this worldcup where it really proved its value. ie. the korea goal vs germany.

although theres a lot of money in football, surely this cant be worth the cost of having to hire so many more refs for a potential minimal gain.

however many more instances where it caused more controversy than otherwise, and also more instances where it caused mistakes due to confusion.

its obvious that the way a video ref should be used needs to be completely rethought - the amazing thing is that fifa didnt realise this prior to the worldcup

While many amateur league games can't even get 1 referee, there's no way there should be more than 3 officials working on top flight games

Commentary made a point yesterday of VAR checking things, and also being in contact with the ref.

I think it could be argued easily this is simply the case that - as many predicted - the better refs are being involved in the bigger games and simply doing a better job.

That ref - and the VAR - got some big decisions wrong yesterday. Croatia should have had a pen on HT when Lovren was grappled to the ground by Maguire and their first goal should have been disallowed for dangerous play. Would have been a FK if it had happened outside the box but both the ref and the VAR bottled it.

Which just goes to show the big decisions will always be tainted by human error no matter how much technology you bring in.

Cant say anything stood out to me as especially wrong. Wasnt anything where I thought "Bloody hell - check that one!"
You need to watch closely the replay of the Lovren incident. Not easy to see unless you study it closely but Maguire has his right arm firmly wrapped around Lovren and brings him down in the box. No question about it, it was a pen and should have been given.
