Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas sweating on Mousa Dembele's fitness

Last Updated: October 22, 2012 11:20am

The niggling complaint, which has carried over from the Belgium international's time at Fulham, kept him out of Saturday's derby date with Chelsea.

Dembele, who linked up with Spurs in a £15million deal on deadline day, aggravated the knock during a World Cup qualifying clash with Scotland.

It is unclear how long the versatile forward will be sidelined for, but Villas-Boas is hoping his medical staff will be reporting back with positive news.

"Top players are missed," said the Portuguese tactician.

"He had a scan, but we haven't see the results yet. He suffers discomfort and pain on his hip, which is not something that shows on the scan so it's difficult to assess.

"Fulham took him off for a period of two weeks (in January). He had a chance to play (against Chelsea) and had a late fitness test, but the pain didn't go away.

"It's something that comes back to him. He fell awkwardly in the Scotland game against Belgium and felt the pain."

Better off resting him for Soton IMHO...want him fit for Emirates Marketing Project and the Filth...he HAS to play against the Filth...

I hope Dembele is back within the next 2 weeks, City away and Arsenal away coming up!

We have a pretty threadbare squad - Ade, BAE, Parker and Dembele are or have been massive players us.

The silver lining has been Vertonghen showing his attacking skills while covering LB and the arrival of Caulker as Spurs rock (while still practically a teenager).

To state the obvious we really need midfield reinforcement - Dembele and Parker - an injury to Sandro and we'd be fudged. Upfront Dempsey can cover Defoe, but neither have Adebayor's guile so his return would be a big boost too.

we're covered with sandro and parker... that's backup in action already.
its cover for Dembele and Bale that we are short of.

While Caulker has been made available to face Wigan, Mousa Dembélé has been ruled out and has undergone a scan on a long-standing hip injury. The Belgium midfielder suffered the same problem at Fulham and may need surgery, which would rule him out until the busy Christmas schedule starts.

"We want to avoid surgery if there is a possibility we can do it," Villas-Boas said.

Really fearing the result of that scan :(

To be without Dembele for almost 2 months would be a massive blow

As usual our medical team have excelled themselves....

Surely this sort of thing should have been picked up in the transfer medical. Sounds like his hip could be shot to pieces. Hardly an easy surgical procedure to correct a troublesome hip.

Villas-Boas said: 'This is something he had at Fulham. It's a pain that went away at Fulham after a few days. But it is still there.'

Apparently Sandro is out for a month.

From Huddlestone being peripheral, surplus to requirements, he is now first name on the team sheet. Can Sigurðsson step up and form a partnership with Hudd? If AVB can get them playing well together in training there may be some hope. Sigurðsson hasn't looked settled, he needs a goal ease himself in.

Cazorla, Wheelchair and Arteta vs Huddlestone and Livermore.

The biggest mismatch since Triple H and Xpac had a two on one handicap match with Takamitchinoku.

Arteta hasn't been great this season, Wheelchair showed today that he is not yet back, playing well and fully fit. Cazorla is the issue, i wouldn't trust any of our men left to mark him out the game.

What was the latest on Parker?
