Tackling a player who is about to score is equal to tackling a player who is losing control of the on the halfway line that's why I dont pay a lot of attention to stats, they prove whatever you like. Previously possession was considered great now many seem relaxed about that stat, the one stat that counts are goals.
I never understand why people’s reaction to some stats being flawed or not telling a full story is to ignore stats completely. Personally I think better to understand exactly what they do and don’t represent, and then use them in tandem with what you think you’ve seen with your own eyes to form an opinion / conclusion.
Also when people disagree or change their minds over the importance of possession, I’d argue that’s got nothing to do with statistics - it’s about the concept of possession itself.
And if goals are all that matters, what’s the point in discussing anything else at all?
