Transfer thread

Tackling a player who is about to score is equal to tackling a player who is losing control of the on the halfway line that's why I dont pay a lot of attention to stats, they prove whatever you like. Previously possession was considered great now many seem relaxed about that stat, the one stat that counts are goals.

I never understand why people’s reaction to some stats being flawed or not telling a full story is to ignore stats completely. Personally I think better to understand exactly what they do and don’t represent, and then use them in tandem with what you think you’ve seen with your own eyes to form an opinion / conclusion.

Also when people disagree or change their minds over the importance of possession, I’d argue that’s got nothing to do with statistics - it’s about the concept of possession itself.

And if goals are all that matters, what’s the point in discussing anything else at all?

There are stats to differentiate based on the risk of a situation.

Stats don't prove whatever you want if you approach them as a tool to learn a bit more about a player, look at the totality and are open about any weaknesses. Cherry picking a couple of figures to fit an argument, isn't data analysis and any arguments made on this basis deserve to be laughed at.

I think that @braineclipse has given you a few good examples.

The data you have chosen to support your argument is blunt and as it covers both players playing a number of positions, doesn't allow for an accurate comparison.
But I have literally used defensive stats for both players, and one player is a DM whilst the other hasn’t played that position all season yet achieve better defensive stats
Couldn’t be less blunt TBH
I haven’t filtered anything other than their names
The other stats that keep on getting thrown up are the filtered ones surely as they highlight what he is good at rather than any weaknesses

Be very careful about questioning anyone on stats on here , the stats followers get very shirty once anyone starts suggesting that stats are not the complete answer to anything in the game. They are nothing but a tool to help but some seem to think they are a answer to everything.

I wish I new the stats on how many threads get derailed and pages used discussing the merits of stats

Indeed.

None except you know more about something than everyone else and you've got the stats to prove it.

Can see Everton outspending us to get him. One thing the stats don’t account for us how Southampton play and how their manager has them setup - which is more like a Poch or Klopp team - and quite different to how we play. Still would be a good signing.

If Everton want him, maybe we should steer clear.... They're specialists in signing overpriced duds.

Recovery

This is where a player recovers the ball in a situation where neither team has possession or where the ball has been played directly to him by an opponent, thus securing possession for their team.

Possession won

The total sum of tackles, aerial duels won, interceptions, blocked crosses or shield outs (shielding the ball from an opponent and letting it run out of play).
Recovery is what I would call interception.

Can't quite follow that! Is that a sarcastic comment suggesting that I think I know more than everyone else and can prove it with stats? If so... you've basically ignored everything I've said, or even extrapolated the opposite meaning from what I've said, and replied with a banal jibe... so I'll just leave it there.

When I write "you" I meant a universal you not you personally, I'm sure some people are trained to analysis the data and put it in to contect but the vast majority do not have that training and simply use stats to make a point which is just their personal opinion in the belief it proves their assumption correct. I believe most stat are limited in the data they are based on and in a physical contact sport do they take into accounts opponents height, weight, speed and determination also weather conditions and venues? I'm sure there is an argument which says these things even themselves out but that hardly scientific. At the end of the day no matter who does what how many times the team that scores the most goal wins.
